The Bakersfield Police Department has made an arrest of a suspect who robbed a
woman and held her against her will, using a firearm.
On August 15, 2013, at approximately 12:19 p.m., Bakersfield Police Officers
responded to the Herbalife Store, located at 1215 Columbus Street for a robbery with a
firearm. When officers arrived, they learned the suspect held the victim against her will
inside the business. During the offence, the suspect fled the business on foot with the
victim’s purse and items of value.
The investigation led to identification of the suspect as Matthew Najera, 26. When
officers located and made contact with Najera, he violently resisted arrest, injuring an
officer. Najera then fled from the officers and discarded a firearm, believed to have
been used in the robbery.
Officers were able to locate and arrest Najera for robbery, false imprisonment, resisting
arrest, felony assault on an officer, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession
of ammunition and possession of stolen property.
The firearm was recovered from Najera, along with the victim’s stolen property.
