The Bakersfield Police Officers involved in the incident that occurred in the 5900 block
of Hughes Lane are identified as Officer Jessica Amos and Officer Jason Mears.
Further Investigation revealed Officer Amos received minor injuries from the shooting,
after Adelaida Cortez grabbed her firearm through the holster and discharged Amos’
duty weapon. Officer Mears received minor injuries as a result of the struggle with
Cortez.

Previous Release August 5, 2013
On August 5, 2013, at about 05:16 a.m. officers of the Bakersfield Police Department
responded to the 5900 block of Hughes Lane in reference to a peace disturbance. Once
on scene officers made contact with Adelaida Cortez HF 34, who was involved in the
peace disturbance. Officers arrested Cortez and attempted to place her into the
backseat of a patrol vehicle. Cortez violently resisted, refusing to get into the back seat.
A struggle ensued and Cortez grabbed one of the officer’s holstered firearm, causing it
to discharge a round, through the holster and into the ground.
Three people standing near the patrol car were hit by shrapnel, causing minor injuries.
Cortez was arrested for Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting
arrest, under the influence of a controlled substance and several other charges.
