For Immediate Release October 1, 2013
The Bakersfield Police Department is continuing to investigate the officer involved
shooting, which occurred at South Real Road and Stockdale Highway on September
30, 2013.
Prior to the suspect, Daniel Garcia, 32, firing at officers, he entered the 7-Eleven
business along with Liodam Gonzalez, 21. Garcia was in the process of stealing beer
from the business when he was confronted by the store clerk. Garcia brandished a
firearm and pointed it at the clerk’s head. Gonzalez fled the store and entered an
awaiting vehicle. Garcia then fled the store with the beer walking towards the suspect
vehicle. Officer Brady Barber and Officer Andrew Ferguson were responding to an
unrelated call when they drove up behind the suspect vehicle and Garcia began
shooting at officers. Officer Ferguson returned fire at Garcia, who fled on foot from the
business and was later located in the 3800 block of Stockdale Highway. The firearm
Garcia used in the offense was recovered.
The investigation led to the arrest of Garcia for attempted murder of a police officer,
robbery, participation in a criminal street gang, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in
possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a weapon with the intent to commit a
felony and a parole violation. Liodam Gonzalez, 21, was also arrested in conjunction
with the shooting. His charges include participation in a criminal street gang and
dissuading a witness. It was determined both Garcia and Gonzalez are documented
criminal street gang members.
Officer Ferguson is a 16 year veteran of the Bakersfield Police Department and Brady
Barber has been employed as a Bakersfield Police Officer for 2 years.
