For Immediate Release December 2, 2013
The Bakersfield Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in locating
a person, or persons, involved in a vehicle burglary investigation.
On December 2, 2013, at approximately 0530 am, officers of the Bakersfield Police
Department responded to a report of gunshots fired in the apartment complex located at
1400 Calcutta Drive. Upon arrival, officers contacted two separate victims of a vehicle
burglary. One of the victims reported exiting their residence where they encountered
the unknown suspect still in the victim’s vehicle. The male victim told the suspect he
was calling the police and produced a firearm ordering the suspect to remain there while
the police responded. The suspect refused to comply, exited the vehicle and made
movements which caused the victim to fear that the suspect was armed. The victim,
believing he was in danger, fired one round at the suspect as the suspect was turning
and running. The suspect again turned in a manner which led the victim to believe that
the suspect was armed. The victim fired a second round at the suspect.
The suspect was described as a:
Black Male Adult, 20’s-30’s, 6’0”, thin build
wearing a plaid hooded jacket, dark pants and a hat.
The suspect was not located and was last seen running west bound through the parking
lot. No victims of gunshot wounds were located. It is not known at this time if the
suspect was struck by the gunfire. The firearm used in this incident was seized pending
further investigation. The citizen who fired the shots was not arrested however; the
investigation into the lawfulness of his actions is on-going. Both bullet strikes were
located and there was minimal property damage to the parking lot and a stucco wall as
a result of the shots.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Bakersfield
Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
