On January 3, 2014, the Bakersfield Police Department Communications Center was
notified by the Kern County Sheriff’s Department Communication Center that a theft had
just occurred at the Fellas’ Store located in the 6200 block of Niles St. The suspect
vehicle in the theft was identified as a stolen vehicle from City jurisdiction. The
Bakersfield Police Department Communications Center broadcast the information to
units of the stolen vehicle. A short time later officers in the area of the theft observed the
suspect vehicle in the area of Niles St. and Alta Vista Dr.
When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the vehicle evaded officers, leading
them on a pursuit through east Bakersfield. The vehicle ran a stop light at Q St. as it
traveled west bound on 34th St. colliding with two other vehicles that were traveling
southbound through the intersection. The occupants of the suspect vehicle then
attempted to flee on foot but were captured by officers.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, Danny Romero, 27, of Bakersfield was arrested for
Grand Theft Auto, Evading, Participation in a Criminal Street Gang, Resisting Arrest,
Burglary and Possession of Stolen Property. He also had an outstanding warrant for
Escape from the Electronic Monitoring Program. Romero was out of custody due to
AB109 California Prison Realignment.
The passenger of the vehicle, Jacqueline Medina, 31, of Bakersfield was arrested for
Grand Theft Auto, Participation in a Criminal Street Gang, Resisting Arrest, Burglary
and Possession of Stolen Property. Romero and Medina were uninjured as a result of
the collision. They were transported to an area hospital for clearance due to the
collision. One occupant of one of the other involved vehicles was transported to an area
hospital for precautionary reasons due to a pregnancy and another for minor injuries.
