On January 9, 2014, Detective Mitch Galland was notified of a possible suspect related to the DNA sample that had been seized. Detective Galland conducted additional investigation and obtained an arrest warrant for the arrest of: Travis Jonathan Smith, 33, of Bakersfield, for Rape by Force, Kidnapping, Kidnap to Commit Rape and False Imprisonment. On January 10, 2014, officers from the Career Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Smith for the outstanding warrant. Smith was booked into the Kern County Jail. Smith is a documented West Side Crip Gang Member and is currently being held on $500,000 bail. Previous Release June 7, 2013 The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating a sexual assault and asking anyone with information to contact the police department. On June 7, 2013, at approximately 2:00 a.m., an adult female was walking in the area of the 5200 block of Monitor Drive, when she was approached by the suspect vehicle. The male suspect offered the victim a ride; however, she refused. The suspect was persistent with his offer and the adult female eventually agreed to take a ride with the suspect. The suspect then drove the adult female to an alternate location, where he sexually assaulted her. The suspect is described as a Black male, with a medium complexion, in his early 30s, 5’03,” 200 lbs., with a heavy build. The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored older model, two door, El Camino. 13-114474 The investigation is ongoing.
