For Immediate Release January 16, 2014
SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR CARJACKING VARIOUS OTHER
CHARGES
On January 16, 2014, at 7:38 am while on his way to court, off-duty Officer John
Otterness attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Truxtun Ave. and F St. The
driver of the vehicle, Philip Hildago, 33, of Bakersfield, chose to accelerate away from
the officer, ignoring Officer Otterness’ overhead red light. Hildalgo collided with a
building in the 2200 block of Truxtun Ave. while attempting to negotiate a corner.
Hildago climbed over the passenger of the vehicle, got out of the car and ran away
while the passenger surrendered to officers. After fleeing from officers Hildago
carjacked a gardening truck and attached trailer and led officers on a pursuit through
downtown Bakersfield throwing gardening tools from the trailer into the roadway as he
fled.
Hildago entered Highway 99 northbound at Wible Rd. and exited a short time later at
Airport Dr. The truck came to a stop at the Eastbound on ramp to Golden State Ave.
and Hildago surrendered. A firearm was located adjacent to the path on which Hildago
fled and he was in possession of ammunition consistent with the firearm when he was
arrested. In addition, narcotics were located in the gardening truck when it was
searched after the pursuit.
Hildago was arrested for Felony Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Resisting and Delaying
Arrest, Carjacking, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Ex-Felon in Possession of a
Firearm/Ammunition and various other firearms related charges. The passenger, Daniel
Peck, 23, of Bakersfield was arrested for Violation of Probation.
