The father was transported to an area hospital by another family member prior to police arrival. When officers arrived they found Augustine Patino, 23, of Bakersfield, to the front of the residence armed with a machete. Patino refused officers’ repeated demands to put the weapon down and repeatedly swung the machete violently at the officers. In the meantime, other officers forced entry into the rear of the residence and removed remaining family members to safety. During the forty minute stand-off officers deployed specialty impact munitions to attempt to disarm and take Patino into custody but those munitions were ineffective. After attacking a small family dog with the machete Patino threw the weapon into the air at which time a police service canine was deployed. Patino was taken into custody with the use of the canine, a taser and several officers. Patino suffered minor puncture wounds from the canine engagement and was transported to an area hospital. Once he is released from the hospital Patino will be booked for Attempted Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer, Brandishing a Weapon, Cruelty to Animals and Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. The family dog suffered from a minor wound and a Bakersfield Animal Control officer responded to assist the family in caring for the animal.
