There was a 4.9% decrease in overall crime compared to 2012. The overall crime rate in 2013 was 521 reported crimes per 10,000 citizens. The overall crime rates for the seven previous years are as follows: 2012 – 555 per 10,000 2011 – 475 per 10,000 2010 – 510 per 10,000 2009 – 530 per 10,000 2008 – 555 per 10,000 2007 – 558 per 10,000 2006 – 562 per 10,000 In 2013, there were 24 homicides compared to 34 homicides in 2012. This represents a 29.4% decrease in overall homicide crime. Twelve of the 24 homicides in 2013 were gang-related compared to 15 gang related homicides in 2012. The department continued to focus on gang-related crime through enforcement, and through prevention efforts not only internally but also through the Bakersfield Safe Streets Partnership and the faith based community. Additional decreases were seen in rape (-23.2%), aggravated assault (-5.1%), burglary (-7.8%), larceny (-2.8%) and auto theft (-7.1%). A 1.6% increase was experienced in the robbery category which was up by eleven offenses compared to 2012. Please refer to the attachment for the complete 2013 Part 1 Crime Statistics.
