For Immediate Release February 5, 2014
On February 5, 2014, at 12:08 pm Bakersfield police officers were dispatched to the
report of a witness following a vehicle that was occupied by subjects whom the witness
had observed exiting a residence in the 9500 block of Bracken Oak Way. The witness
said it looked as if the suspects were carrying pillow cases that appeared to be filled
with property from the residence. The witness followed the suspects around the
neighborhood as the suspects began throwing items from the vehicle. The witness was
providing Bakersfield police dispatchers the path of the vehicle as it was traveling
through the neighborhood.
The vehicle eventually stopped at Haggin Oaks Park where two suspects fled from the
vehicle on foot. At about this same time Sergeant Scott Thatcher arrived at the park and
saw the suspects fleeing on foot in the park discarding additional items including the
victim’s passport and cash. The two suspects were taken into custody at the park after
they tried to avoid capture by running through the pond.
The suspect vehicle fled eastbound on Limoges Way occupied by two additional
suspects and was found abandoned a short time later near Haggin Oaks Blvd. and
Limoges Way. A third suspect was located after a yard to yard search of the area by
officers. While officers were still searching the area, a subject, Christian Salazar, 19, of
Bakersfield, went into the lobby of the downtown police department to report the
suspect vehicle stolen. Prior to the offense, on February 5, 2014, an officer had cited
Salazar and another subject, Robert Valles, 22, of Bakersfield for traffic violations in the
5700 block of Sundale Dr. Valles was one of the suspects in custody at Haggin Oaks
Park from the Burglary.
When confronted by officers with this information, Salazar admitted to being involved in
the offense. Officers arrested Salazar, Valles, Jose Corona, 18, of Bakersfield and a
juvenile for Burglary, Conspiracy and Resisting Arrest. Additional charges may also be
pending. Leo B. Hart, Christa McAuliffe and Laurelglen Elementary schools were put on
14-26441
lock down for a short time due to the search of the neighborhood. The residence in the
9500 block of Bracken Oak Way was confirmed to have been burglarized.
