For Immediate Release February 6, 2014
On February 4, 2014, at 11:57 am, Bakersfield police officers were dispatched to Mercy
Hospital on Truxtun Ave. regarding the report of an unresponsive two year old who was
brought in by the mother. The mother reported that she brought the child to the hospital
after the child choked on a potato chip. Physicians at the hospital determined that the
child was suffering from injuries that were suspicious in nature and called police.
On February 4, 2014, detectives served a search warrant at the juvenile’s residence
located in the 400 block of Whitlock St. Investigation revealed that the child suffered an
apparent accidental fall ten days earlier in the rear yard of the residence. The mother
and her boyfriend sought alternative medical care at a private residence for the child
after the fall. The child is currently in critical but stable condition and has been placed in
protective custody along with a five year old sibling pending further investigation. The
investigation into the alternative medical care is also ongoing.
