For Immediate Release February 18, 2014
On February 17, 2014, at approximately 8:54 p.m., officers of the Bakersfield Police
Department responded to a report of an injury hit and run accident at Hageman Road
and Drake Passage Way.
The investigation revealed that an adult bicyclist was riding west on Hageman Road in
the bicycle lane when Jonathan Smith (30) of Bakersfield was driving his vehicle west
on Hageman Road. Smith’s vehicle, a 2000 model GMC Sierra Truck, drifted into the
bicycle lane and struck the bicyclist. Smith fled the scene in his vehicle west on
Hageman Road.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers located Smith and his vehicle at a residence in the
12200 block of El Captain Way. Smith was arrested and charged with hit and run with
injury, driving on a suspended driver’s license, and having no insurance. Smith later
resisted officers while being booked into the Kern County Jail and he was subsequently
charged with an additional crime of resisting/obstructing a police officer.
The bicyclist was transported to a local area hospital with moderate injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is
