General News:
• The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and Park have been
identified as the recipient of Macy’s “Heart Your Park” fundraising program.
From March 7th to March 31st, customers at Macy’s at the Valley Plaza can
donate $1 or more at the register, with 100 percent of the donations benefiting
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and Park. On top of that, Macy’s
will match the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar, up to
$250,000 in total. Thank you Macy’s for your contribution to our City! Please see
attachment.
• I will be out of office the week March 10th. Rhonda Smiley will be in charge in
my absence, and she and my staff will have my contact information, should
that be necessary.
TRIP:
Lane Closure and Traffic Control: SR-178 at Masterson Street- Due to weather
events and unanticipated utility work, the lane closure for the eastbound lane
on SR-178, from Kern Canyon Road (SR-184) to just east of Masterson Street, has
been extended through March 14th. The City of Bakersfield and Caltrans are
widening this section of roadway to add a left-turn lane for eastbound SR-178 to northbound Masterson Street.
Motorists should anticipate construction crews to be working in this area
Monday through Friday, weather permitting, between the hours of 8 a.m. and
3 p.m. each day. Motorists traveling through this area may want to allow extra
travel time or select an alternate route while this work is underway. Crews will
be conducting traffic control through the work zone with the help of flagging personnel, and both eastbound and westbound traffic may be stopped for up
to five minutes before being allowed to proceed.
General Information
March 7, 2014 Page 2
Ramp Closure: SR-178/Fairfax Road- Motorists are advised that the eastbound
SR-178 onramp from Fairfax Road will be closed Monday through Friday, March
10th-14th, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Motorists may
access eastbound SR-178 via either Oswell Street or at Kern Canyon Road (SR-
184).
The contractor for the new SR-178/Morning Drive Interchange will be paving
the new lanes south of the freeway and the closure is needed to allow trucks
and equipment to safely enter and exit the work area.

(Bakersfield, CA) – March 6, 2014 – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and Park has been

improvements, such as maintaining trails, playgrounds, and ball fields, and everything in between.
“We are thrilled to partner with Macy’s and NRPA for ‘Heart Your Park’ this spring,” said Dianne Hoover,
Director of Recreation and Parks for the City of Bakersfield. “Through this wonderful program and
donations by Macy’s customers, we are excited about the increased awareness and additional funding for
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and Park. This community center and park is a great asset
to the community, and we greatly appreciate Macy’s support.”
