For Immediate Release March 9, 2014
At about 2:00 AM on March 9, 2014, Bakersfield police officers saw an occupied stolen
vehicle in the area of Haley Street and Eureka Street. The officers tried to stop the
vehicle, but it failed to yield to the officers’ lights and siren. As the officers pursued the
stolen car southbound on Haley Street, Walter Michael Kai Williams, age 22, of
Bakersfield, was walking northbound on Haley Street.
As the pursuing police vehicle passed Williams, he produced a handgun, said
“(Expletive) the police,” and fired multiple rounds at the passing patrol car. Another
police officer who was nearby saw Williams with the gun still in hand and confronted
him. Williams discarded his weapon and ran, but officers quickly apprehended him.
Officers recovered the firearm, which had previously been reported stolen. None of the
shots fired by Williams struck the patrol car. Officers searched the area but were unable
to locate any bullet strikes.
No officers were injured and no shots were fired by officers. The occupants of the stolen
vehicle surrendered nearby and were arrested without incident for the stolen vehicle
charges. They appear to have no involvement in Williams’ actions.
Williams is a known gang member with an extensive criminal history and was on post-
release community supervision at the time of this incident. He was taken to a local
hospital for clearance due to an unrelated medical issue. Williams will be booked into
the Kern County Jail for attempted murder, weapons charges, possession of stolen
property, and participation in a criminal street gang.
