For Immediate Release March 12, 2014
On Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at about 8:36 p.m. the Bakersfield Police Department
received a call from an anonymous caller, directing Officers to an apartment complex
parking lot in the 1400 block of Oregon Street. The caller stated a vehicle was parked at
that location, with what appeared to be recent damage and was possibly related to the fatal
Hit & Run collision that occurred in the 1100 block of Monterey Street the night prior.
On arrival, Officers assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Detail were able to locate the
vehicle and evidence consistent with it being the suspect vehicle which fled the scene of the
fatal collision involving the pedestrian.
Officers contacted Mario Martinez 20, of Bakersfield and determined he was the driver of
the suspect vehicle at the time of the fatal collision.
Martinez was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail on suspicion of felony hit & run,
vehicular manslaughter and unlicensed driver.
The investigation into this fatal collision is continuing.
