For Immediate Release March 12, 2014
At about 1:52 AM today, Bakersfield police were dispatched to the FoodMaxx grocery
store at 6301 White Lane regarding a shot fired during a fight. While on the way to the
call, officers were notified of an injury collision and additional shots fired nearby at White
Lane and Wilson Road. Responding officers found an abandoned wrecked vehicle.
Investigating officers found the vehicle’s owner, Julio Chavez, age 33, of Bakersfield,
had been involved in the original peace disturbance at FoodMaxx and had fired a shot
at people involved in that dispute. Chavez fled the scene in his vehicle and fired
additional shots at the victims, who were following him. Chavez lost control of his
vehicle and struck a tree at White Lane and Wilson Road. He was then picked up by an
accomplice, Jessie Meraz, age 24, of Bakersfield, who drove Chavez from the scene of
the collision.
Officers located evidence in Chavez’ vehicle that connects him with the shootings.
Police found Chavez and Meraz a short time later and arrested both men. Chavez is
charged with multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Meraz is charged with
assisting Chavez.
No one was injured during this incident. Police have not located the firearm used.
