Previous Release March 14, 2014
On March 14, 2014, at 3:00 pm a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to pull
over a vehicle in which the driver was talking on a cellular telephone near Belle Terrace
and Castro Ln. The driver of the vehicle, Miguel Villanueva, 29, of Bakersfield, who is on
Post Community Release Supervision, or AB109, failed to stop the vehicle. Villanueva
led the CHP officer on a short pursuit eventually colliding with a parked car near Belle
Terrace and McDonald Way.
Villanueva fled from the vehicle on foot and the CHP officer temporarily lost sight of him.
A citizen advised the CHP officer that the suspect had fled into a detached garage in the
1000 block of McDonald Way. Several CHP officers responded to the garage in an
attempt to locate Villanueva at which time Villanueva shot at one of the CHP officers
nearly striking him. Bakersfield Police officers began arriving on scene and along with
CHP officers contained Villanueva in the garage ordering him to surrender. Villanueva
fired several more rounds at officers and one BPD officer returned fire.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and BPD SWAT and bomb squad were
summoned to the scene and with use of the bomb squad robot a dialogue was

established between Villanueva and SWAT negotiators. Villanueva’s family members
were summoned to the scene to assist in seeking Villanueva’s peaceful surrender. After
several hours of negotiation SWAT officers made contact with Villanueva and an officer
involved shooting ensued in which Villanueva was injured.
Villanueva was transported to an area hospital where he is currently listed stable
condition. The vehicle Villanueva was operating was a reported stolen vehicle.
Villanueva has been arrested for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer and additional
charges are anticipated. The investigation into the details of the shooting is underway.
McDonald Way and a portion of Belle Terrace is still closed. It is anticipated that Belle
Terrace will be opened back up in several hours however; McDonald Way will likely be
closed until Saturday Morning. No officers or civilians were injured as a result of this
