The investigation into this incident revealed that the suspect, Shawn Ibarra, 35, of
Bakersfield, armed himself with a breaker bar and forced his way into the residence
through a door threatening a guest of the home owner. The guest fled to the home
owner’s bedroom and barricaded himself in the room with the home owner. Ibarra
attempted to force the bedroom door open making threats against the guest. The home
owner, fearing for his personal safety and the safety of his guest, fired one round
striking and killing Ibarra. Ibarra was on Post Release Community Supervision,
commonly referred to as AB109. There are currently no charges pending against the
home owner. The case will be sent to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for
review.
Previous Release March 24, 2014
On March 24, 2014, at 4:51 am Bakersfield police officers were dispatched to a
residence in the 4100 block of Christmas Tree Ln. regarding an unknown type of
disturbance. While en-route to the scene officers received information that someone at
the residence had been shot. Investigation revealed that the suspect, known to the
occupants of the residence, was shot by one of the occupants after the suspect forced
his way inside through the front door. The suspect died at the scene. The investigation
into the events surrounding this shooting is on-going.
