For Immediate Release March 25, 2014
The Bakersfield Police Department is releasing additional information regarding this
investigation. The firearm used by the home owner in this incident was a twelve-gauge
shotgun that he fired one time through a closed bedroom door striking and killing Ibarra.
There was a dispute between Ibarra and the guest over property that led to the guest
retreating inside the residence followed by Ibarra. The home owner warned Ibarra
several times that he would fire the weapon if Ibarra did not discontinue trying to break
down the bedroom door.
Previous Release March 24, 2014
The investigation into this incident revealed that the suspect, Shawn Ibarra, 35, of
Bakersfield, armed himself with a breaker bar and forced his way into the residence
through a door threatening a guest of the home owner. The guest fled to the home
owner’s bedroom and barricaded himself in the room with the home owner. Ibarra
attempted to force the bedroom door open making threats against the guest. The home
owner, fearing for his personal safety and the safety of his guest, fired one round
striking and killing Ibarra. Ibarra was on Post Release Community Supervision,
commonly referred to as AB109. There are currently no charges pending against the
home owner. The case will be sent to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for
review.
