For Immediate Release March 25, 2014
Shortly before noon today, the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a report of
shots fired in the area of 8th St. and Eye St. When officers arrived, they found shell
casings indicating shots had been fired but no victims or suspects were in the area.
Witnesses provided a vehicle description and a short time later, a police officer spotted
the vehicle near 10th St. and P St. Officers detained Shawndel Ziegler, age 22, of
Bakersfield, and Anthony Gaston, age 23, of Bakersfield, nearby. Witnesses identified
the vehicle and told officers Ziegler had fired shots at another vehicle.
Officers arrested Ziegler for reckless discharge of a firearm and Gaston for an
outstanding parole violation warrant.
A victim later came to the Bakersfield Police Department and stated she had been the
intended target of the shooting. Officers examined her vehicle and found bullet strikes
consisted with the statements of the victim and witnesses. The victim was uninjured.
Ziegler has also been charged with attempted murder and participation in a criminal
street gang. The firearm used in this incident has not been recovered. The name of the
victim is not being released at this time out of concern for her safety.
