For Immediate Release April 10, 2014
At about 7:40 PM tonight, a Bakersfield Police Department officer was on patrol in the
700 block of Chester Avenue when a woman waved him over. She told the officer a
man was attacking a woman in the 700 block of K St.
When the officer arrived on K St, a number of bystanders directed him to where
PEDRO TORRES HERNANDEZ, age 58, of Bakersfield,
was physically assaulting a woman. The officer confronted Hernandez, who was
swinging a large flashlight and refused to comply with orders. Another police officer
came to assist and Hernandez violently attacked one of the officers, causing a minor
injury. Other officers responded to help and they were eventually able to take
Hernandez into custody.
Hernandez was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during his
arrest and apparent drug influence. He is under arrest for spousal abuse, assault with a
deadly weapon on a police officer, and felony resisting arrest. Hernandez is on Post
Release Community Supervision (AB 109).
The woman assaulted by Hernandez was his live-in girlfriend, who was injured but
declined medical treatment.
