HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 001-02RESOLUTION NO. 0 0 I - 0 2 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD IN SUPPORT OF ENHANCED AND EXPANDED SCHOOL PUBLIC SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAMS OF THE BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT WHEREAS, the Bakersfield Police Department has for many years provided public safety information to children through D.A.R.E. and other programs geared toward school-aged children, and WHEREAS, now, more than at any other time in recent history, our young children are in need of expanded access to professionals through educational programs on drugs, community policing, and others, and WHEREAS, the goal of expanding and enhancing the scope of educational efforts to inform our young children is to make our community a safer place for them to live and play, and WHEREAS, programs such as D.A.R.E., community policing, and others help children to cope with pressures placed upon them and to be able to make good judgements based on facts, and WHEREAS, D.A.R.E. is offered in only seven schools, and WHEREAS, the possibility exists for existing community policing officers to provide a level of support to non-D.A.R.E, schools, and WHEREAS, the possibility also exists for existing community policing officers to introduce conflict resolution techniques into discussions with students, and WHEREAS, new programs such as "Eddie Eagle" can assist in teaching very basic gun accident prevention, such as what to do if a child finds a gun, and WHEREAS, the possibility exists for existing community policing officers to assist schools with emerging public safety issues, either on campus or in the community, prior to their becoming criminal-activity issues. -1- NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield as follows: The Council supports continuing and enhanced efforts of the Bakersfield Police Department relating to the very successful D.A.R.E. program and encourages, where possible, the expansion of the Bakersfield Police Department's public school safety programs through enhanced interaction with existing community policing officers. -o0o- -2- I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed and adopted by the Coun,qj~f tl3e.
