If such items wait until the second meeting in June, it is possible there will be competing or contradictory motions. Often times, it requires research to look into alternates, funding sources and the like. A call, email, or comment at the public session would therefore be appreciated.  The California Department of Transportation cordially invites you to the ribbon cutting ceremony for State Route 99 South Bakersfield Widening Project Thursday, May 29th. Please see attached flyer for more details.  The Recreation and Parks Department has filled all of their swim lessons! Normally, swim lessons cost $50 per session per person, but thanks to the Department’s diligence in seeking grants, and with additional assistance from the sponsors of the grants, the prices have been reduced to $5 for the citizens of Bakersfield - First 5 Kern Grant ($52,257) (0 to 5 years) 540 swim lessons-Full - USA Swimming Foundation Make A Splash Grant ($4,995) (6 months to 12 years) 111 swim lessons-Full - Kaiser Permanente Operation Splash Grant ($35,000) (3 to 18 years) 250 swim lessons-Full - Kaiser Permanente Operation Splash Pass for Free Open Swim at Jefferson, MLK, or Silver Creek Pools for income eligible participants— 200 Swim Passes-Full General Information May 23, 2014 Page 2  The Recreation and Parks Department has been named a finalist for the 2014 National Gold Medal Awards for excellence in Parks and Recreation Management. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials. This year’s finalists will compete for Grand Plaque Award honors this summer, and the six Grand Plaque recipients will be announced live during the 2014 NRPA Congress in Charlotte, NC, October 14th-16th. Congratulations to all of those who have worked so hard to achieve this award. Please see the attached Press Release for additional information.  Operation Splash event is on Monday, May 26th (Memorial Day) from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at McMurtrey Aquatic Center. There will be games, water slides, diving, water safety information and Rethink Your Drink Educational booths to enjoy. The event is co- sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and the cost is $3 per person or $10 for a group of 4 to 6. For more information, please call 852-7430.  All spray parks will be open all weekend long including Memorial Day from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The Planz Skate Park opened Thursday, May 22nd. The grand opening event was enthusiastically received with well over 200 attendees, and we expect the facility to be a very popular amenity to our community. Attached are photos of the event.  I will be out of office on Friday, May 30th. Steve Teglia will be in charge in my absence, and he and my staff will have my contact information, should that be necessary. TRIP Advisories:  Intermittent Traffic Control on State Route 178 Motorists should anticipate having to stop for up to five minutes while traveling on State Route 178 in the vicinity of the Fairfax Interchange, Wednesday through Friday, May 28th-30th. The contractor for the State Route 178/Morning Drive Interchange project will be hauling materials onto the job site and crews will be conducting traffic control as needed with the use of flagging personnel. These operations will be conducted between the hours of 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., each day.  Nighttime Closures for Chester Avenue/H Street On-ramp The Chester Avenue/H Street westbound on-ramp will be closed during nighttime hours, Tuesday through Thursday, May 27th-29th to facilitate the removal of shoring at the nearby pump station. General Information May 23, 2014 Page 3 The ramp will be closed between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., each night. The ramp is expected to be open to traffic during daytime hours. During the closures, motorists will need to use the State Route 58/Union Avenue Interchange, located approximately one mile to the east, or continue west on Brundage Lane for approximately one mile to access northbound or southbound State Route 99. Event Notifications: o A Thousand Flags event – Over Memorial Day Weekend (May 24th- May 26th), the sparkling lake in The Park at River Walk will be surrounded by a sea of red, white and blue as 1,000 American flags are flown in tribute to all who have sacrificed and who continue to sacrifice for the United States of America. There will be activities and fun for the whole family. A special ceremony will be held at Noon Monday, May 26th. This year’s proud sponsor of the Gold Medal Awards program is Musco Lighting LLC. Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. Applications are separated into seven classes, with five classes based on population, one class for armed forces recreation communities and the State Park System Class awarded on odd numbered years. The Recreation and Parks Department is a finalist in the Class II population category of 150,000 – 400,000. The City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks Department serves the greater Bakersfield area with 149 fulltime employees, 59 parks, nine spray parks, four outdoor pools, two community centers, the 32-mile Kern River Parkway, and numerous tennis and basketball courts. In addition to the parks and recreation facilities, the Recreation and Parks Department maintains over 160 miles of landscaped streets throughout the city. Agencies are judged on their ability to address the needs of those they serve through the collective energies of citizens, staff and elected officials. The City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks Department joins three other finalists in the class that will compete for grand honors this year. They include Henderson, NV; Plano, TX and Arlington, TX. The Park at Riverwalk will come alive over Memorial Day weekend with the flying of 1,000 flags in honor of the many heroes who have served, and continue to serve, our nation and our local community. The event is presented by Breakfast Rotary, and the flags are sponsored by community members wishing to honor friends and loved-ones who are veterans and active service members, plus first responders (including law enforcement, fire personnel and emergency medical technicians) who put their lives in jeopardy for their communities’ safety.
