HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 108-14RESOLUTION NO. .� 0 R- 14 A RESOLUTION OF LOCAL SUPPORT FOR CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY BILL NO. 1513 WHEREAS, the Great Recession has led to an increased number of vacant houses throughout California; and WHEREAS, individuals often referred to as "squatters" will occupy vacant houses without the permission of the property owner; and WHEREAS, under existing California law, evicting squatters requires going to court and can take a minimum of 30 to 60 days; and WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1513 will create an additional tool that property owners can use to remove squatters from vacant houses; and WHEREAS, a pilot project will be created that allows property owners in Palmdale and Lancaster to declare residential property to be vacant and register it with local law enforcement; and WHEREAS, any subsequent squatters found on registered property will be subject to arrest for trespassing; and WHEREAS, the City will monitor the effectiveness of the pilot project created by Assembly Bill 1513 in Palmdale and Lancaster. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Bakersfield as follows: 1. The above recitals are true and correct. 2.
