To date, it has been very popular, with nearly 1,700 downloads across all major smartphone platforms. Staff has received over 300 service requests during the same time period, with graffiti cleanup and street lights being the two most “popular” service requests. Staff is continuing to develop future phases of the app which will expand the reporting capabilities available to users. The San Joaquin Community Hospital Ice Center and the Bright House Networks Amphitheater websites are also soon to be being updated. Steve Teglia will be in charge during my absence and the staff will have my contact information in the event that I need to be contacted.  There are two groundbreaking ceremonies that are scheduled in the next few weeks for two of the City-sponsored affordable housing projects associated with the City’s Prop 1C Infill Infrastructure Grant. All Councilmembers are cordially invited to attend and participate in the ceremonies. The first groundbreaking is for the Park 20th project, scheduled for Monday, August 18th at 9:00 a.m. at 400 20th Street, just west of “V” Street. This project will provide 56 units of low-income housing, including 25 units reserved for veterans. The project is being constructed by Golden Empire Affordable Housing, the development arm of the Kern County Housing Authority. General Information August 15, 2014 Page 2 The second groundbreaking is for the Courtyard project, which is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th at 10:00 a.m. at 1303 “S” Street, just north of California Avenue. This project will provide 72 units of housing for low-income seniors. The project is being constructed by Chelsea Investments, Inc. TRIP:  Update: Survey Work Continues on 23rd and 24th Streets Survey crews will continue to collect data for the final design of the 24th Street Improvement Project for several weeks, and motorists should anticipate seeing crews working along the corridor through October. Work will take place at various locations along 23rd and 24th Streets between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The majority of the survey work will occur off the street, but crews may need to be in and around the travel lanes for brief periods of time. Significant impacts to traffic are not anticipated.  Nighttime Closures for P Street Motorists are advised that P Street at State Route 58 will be closed at night from Sunday, through Thursday, August 17th – 21st. The closures are needed to allow the contractor to remove the falsework from the bridge crossing over P Street. These closures are expected to be in effect each night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Motorists may detour around the closure by using either Union Avenue or South Chester Avenue. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE TWO o Aquatic Maintenance: • City staff continues to work on developing a “scope of work” for the rehabilitation for the McMurtrey waterslide project. • All spray parks were closed on July 28th due to state water restrictions. • Annual State water slide inspection performed on July 25th. o Special Event Reservations: o July 6th – Beach Park, Union de Clubes Peruanos Soccer Tournament – 200 Guests o July 13th – Beach Park, Union de Clubes Peruanos Soccer Tournament – 200 Guests o July 26th – Beach Park, Union de Clubes Peruanos Soccer Tournament – 200 Guests o Total Attendance: 18,216 Reservations/Special Events Aquatics/McMurtrey Aquatic Center: o Total attendance for Aquatics was 49,717 which was an increase of 6.4% compared to July 2013 of 46,738. This was due to the number of swim lessons and programs offered this year. The implementation of the new Kaiser Permanente Operation Splash Grant created more swim lessons at each pool. o Monthly attendance at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center was 28,592 compared to last year’s 26,989. This 5.9% increase was due to the added swim lessons offered through our grants and the increased attendance in the other aquatic programs especially the new Parent & Me Pool Playtime Program. • 100 Mile Club o 100 Mile Club: The 100 Mile Lap Swim Club is currently made up of 363 active members that swam 13,854.51 miles this month. The club has swum a combined total of 135,416 miles. Jefferson Pool: • Total Attendance at Jefferson Pool for the month of July was 4,626. Last year’s total attendance was 4,191. This increase is due to the additional swim lessons offered this year through the various grants. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE THREE Silver Creek Pool: • Total Attendance at Silver Creek Pool for the month of July was 13,492. Last year’s total attendance was 13,107. This growth is due to increased numbers in our swim lessons, recreation swim, and pool rentals. Swim Lessons Recreational Swim Training Rentals Total Attendance: 9,692 3,134 91 575 13,492 MLK Pool: • Total Attendance at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pool for the month of July was 2,855. Last year’s total attendance was 2,166. This increase is due to the rise in numbers attending recreation swim and the Camp King Program. Swim Lessons Camp Lessons Rec. Swim Camp Rec. Swim Training Total Attendance: 748 240 1,089 720 58 2,855 Make A Splash Program: o Staff presented Water Safety Presentations to 152 preschool aged children at 7 different schools this month. The Make A Splash discounted swim lessons began on July 14th with all 540 openings filled to 100% capacity. In addition, on July 19th staff conducted a Parent CPR and First Aid Training to14 participants. National Recreation and Parks Month: o In observation of Recreation and Parks Month, discounted open swim was offered on July 8th and July 23rd at all city pools. City Championship Swim Meet: o The annual City Championship Swim Meet was held on July 26th at McMurtrey Aquatic Center. The City of Bakersfield Recreational Swim Teams who competed included: 2 McMurtrey teams, 2 Silver Creek teams, 1 Martin Luther King Jr. team, and 1 Jefferson team. Participants received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed medals and ribbons for 4th through 16th place. Mid-Summer Staff Training: o Aquatic staff participated in Lifeguard Olympics on July 8th and 9th at McMurtrey Aquatic Center. McMurtrey had 4 teams, Silver Creek had 2 teams, and Jefferson and MLK each had 1 team as they competed against each other in various life-saving skills. After 2 days and 9 events including a fierce Manager Challenge, McMurtrey Team#1 Mermaids came in first place by 1 point. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE FOUR Family Fun Night &Wacky Fridays: o Family Fun Night was held on Friday, July 11th at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center from 6:00 to 9:00 pm with a “Beach Blast” theme. There were 361 people who enjoyed the slides, played games, competed in the cannon ball contest, and won prizes at the “Rethink Your Drink” and Water Safety Booths. Wacky Fridays were also held at Silver Creek, Jefferson, and MLK Pools one Friday this month during recreation swim with the same “Beach Blast” theme. Participants at these pools enjoyed the same games, prizes, booths, and contests as the Family Fun Nights. o Donation Total: $ 645.00 o Total Attendance: 49,717 ATHLETICS: o Adult, Youth, Fitness and Adaptive Programs total attendance for the month of July was 30,411 as compared to last year’s total of 35,481. The decrease in attendance was attributed to a cap that was placed on the number of teams allowed into this year’s summer softball League in an effort to improve the quality of the program. There was also a cancelation of a weekend softball tournament rental. Athletic Programming Adult Softball o League games continued through the month of July five days a week. There are 167 teams in the summer league with 102 men’s teams and 65 co-ed teams. Softball Tournaments o Mesa Marin Sports Complex hosted an ASA Men’s and Co-ed Softball Tournament on July 12th and 13th. A total of 23 teams participated in the tournament. Pee Wee Camp & Sports o Pee Wee Camp was held for one week this month at Silver Creek Park. The focus of the camp is to introduce 3-5 year olds to the fun and excitement of sports. o Pee Wee Sports was held on Saturday’s at Silver Creek Park this month. The program introduced kids to sports such as soccer, basketball, t-ball, kickball, track & field, and circle games. o Participation in both Pee Wee Sports and Pee Wee Sports Camp grew by over 100% as compared to last July. Total Attendance: 30,411 We enhance the quality of life through a variety of programs, parks, and partnerships. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE FIVE DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. COMMUNITY CENTER: o Overall attendance for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center was 6,343. The increase in attendance by 17% was attributed to providing free breakfast and more participation in the free lunch program. Camp King • Through a grant from the Arts Council the center was able to have dance lessons for the campers with E-Baby and a puppet show from Omni Present. • A donation provided by San Joaquin Hospital offered campers ice skating and a trip to the movies. • Several local groups helped make this year’s camp a success. Weekly visits and curriculum will be shared with campers by Ebony Counseling Center, and Stay Focused Ministries. • We had parents fill out an evaluation on the last day of camp. Here is some of their comments: o “It was my son’s first time at camp. He loved it! o “She has officially broken out of her shyness” o “Thank You for an excellent program”. o “My grandson loves this camp and wants to come every year”. o “His esteem is definitely up”. o “Thank you to all the staff for being so kind to my son; he really enjoyed your program”. Donation Total: $2,462.50 Total Attendance: 6,343 SILVER CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER/SAUNDERS MULTI-USE FACILITY: Silver Creek Community Center Total attendance for Silver Creek Community Center was 2,103 as compared to last year of 1,256. o There were three (3) rentals for the month of July. Camp Fun • Attendance: Weekly Average: 287 Monthly: 1,435 Revenue: $26,383 Saunders Recreational Facility o Total overall attendance for the Saunders Recreational Facility was 956. There were no rentals for the Saunders Recreational Facility for the month of July. o Hockey Program o Registered: 47 Participants Total Attendance: 188 o Soccer Program o Registered: 16 Teams Total Attendance: 600 o Basketball Program o Registered: 42 Participants Total Attendance: 168 • Total Attendance for Silver Creek & Saunders Recreational Facility : 3,059 We enhance the quality of life through a variety of programs, parks, and partnerships. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE SIX PARKS: Aera Park o Crews removed large cement section that was damaged and formed for concrete pour. Amtrak Station o Tumbleweeds along north side railroad tracks east of the Amtrak Station were sprayed by Area II spray rig operator at the request of General Services. CHN o Dianne Hoover, Ken Trone and Frank Hinojosa met with Miranda from Kern Federal Credit Union to discuss final details on H Street Improvement Project. H Street Underpass o Work for H Street Improvement Project has begun. Staff worked overtime on 7/26/14 to remove existing landscaping. Mesa Marin o Test unit of magnation water treatment was installed on valve at turf traffic circle area in parking lot on 7/2/14. Jerry Todd with C-F Technologies has been monitoring and conducting core samples periodically. Saunders Park o On 7/8/14 the irrigation tank replacement was completed and the system reassembled and was properly adjusted. TPRW o On 7/3/14 crew delivered and set up all three portable restrooms. The electrical run to the top of the hill for the restroom hook up was also completed. Wilderness Park o Raised and broken sidewalk removed and replaced. Gopher Treatments o River Oaks Park – treated 139 gopher holes o Greystone Park – treated 8 gopher holes o Tevis Park – Treated 24 gopher holes o River Run Blvd. –Treated 9 gopher holes o Garden Park – Treated 71 gopher holes o Allen Road – Treated 36 gopher holes o Chambers Blvd. – Treated 14 gopher holes o Windermere Park – Treated 22 gopher holes o Buena Vista Road – Treated 14 gopher holes o Pensinger Road – Treated 22 gopher holes Craftworker Division o H Street Project - Craftworkers assisted with the removal of irrigation components for the landscape rehabilitation project on H Street on 7/21/14 and 7/22/14. o Corporation Yard – Crew installed backflow device, bored through the wall and ran the water supply lines for the installation of the new ice machine on 7/25/14. DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS JULY MONTHLY REPORT PAGE SEVEN Tree Division o Tree staff removed approximately twenty-five (25) trees next to Marine Armory on Chester Avenue. These trees were located on City property just North of Armory between the armory and canal. This was requested by the Armory due to the fact that they have had multiple burglaries and homeless encampments in that area. o Tree staff removed a hazard tree at the BPD shooting range; it was removed a mulberry tree that had split. o The annual contractors have been working in several parks and on Harris Road from Gosford to Stine. They have completed trimming at Quailwood Park and Centennial Park. Contractors are scheduled to trim Tevis Park, Challenger Park and Amberton Park after they finish Harris Road. o City tree staff has begun trimming all school and crosswalk signs throughout the City in preparation for the new school year.
