Staff learned that the project will be receiving the 2014 Chapter A Excellence from the American Public Works Association (APWA), v make it eligible for the APWA National Conference Award in Aug� ❖ The Community Development Department is pleased to anno� appointment of Jacqui Kitchen as the City's new Planning Directc over the position vacated by the retirement of Jim Eggert. extensive recruitment that attracted candidates from across thE Ms. Kitchen emerged as the best qualified candidate. Ms. Kitc Bakersfield native, who received her Bachelor's and Master's from Cal State Bakersfield. For the last eight years she has worke Kern County Planning and Community Development DepartmE recently as Supervising Planner, leading staff in the Advanced and CEQA Division. Ms. Kitchen will work under the direction of Community DevE Director poug Mclsaac, and will be part of the Department's e management team along with Building Director Phil Burns. Ms. Kitchen's first day with the City will be DecembE General Informat November 14, 2c Traffic Advisory On November 14th the City of Bakersfield, in coordination with � will begin a construction project to improve the ride quality on RE between Stockdale Highway and Elcia Drive. The project will k Friday, November 14th at 10:00 p.m., and end on Saturday, Nover at 3:00 p.m. Crews will be grinding and paving the intersection Route 58 and Real Road, along with the roadway between S� Highway and Elcia Drive. This section of roadway will be closed tc traffic in all directions during this operation, which may result delays. Vehicles traveling westbound on State Route 58 will be c onto State Route 99. Sal's work with homeless co opened up new ways of addressing problems while saving tax dollars. Abstract As a non-profit prong of the City of Bakersfield Solid Waste Divisio Bakersfield Beautiful (KBB) is able to act as a link between various governmen to achieve common goals across jurisdictional boundaries. As such, KBB is th multi-award-winning Freeway Litter Cleanup programme. With KBB at the cen� multi-agency, corporate and volunteer-led effort employs homeless-centre clie up massive amounts of freeway litter. This unorthodox approach is a win-win : connecting the state department of transport, the city, the county, the private : the community. Keep Bakersfield Beautiful's partnership with the city and statE a bold and ground-breaking approach, as it empowers and contracts with the homeless centre to clean up the state's rights of way. The programme is as he as it is productive. To date this programme has enabled 250 formerly homeles members to live in a home again by cleaning up tons of litter monthly, and oth stakeholders have come forward to contribute funds and manpower to expanc programme. This was an increase of 7.9� and r the growth in attendance of Deep Water Intervals and CPR class the new rental of Bakersfield Swim. o The 100 Mile Lap Swim Club is currently made up of 397 active m� that swam 14,217.84 miles this month. The club has swum a comk total of 139,522 miles. o The Make A Splash drowning prevention program held a CPR an� Class on October 4t" and certified 15 expectant parents, parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children ages 0 to 5. Department of Recreation October 2014 Mon� ■ A cap of 170 teams was placed on the number of teams c into this year's Fall Softball League in an effort to improve t quality of the program. • Athletic Programming: o Adult Softball: ■ The Fall Softball League continued through the month of with 168 teams playing a total of 399 games this month. • Softball Tournaments: ■ Mesa Marin Sports Complex hosted a National Softball Ass (NSA) Youth Fast Pitch Tournament on October 4t" & 5t". T� two (22) teams participated in the tournament. ■ Mesa Marin also hosted an ASA Tournament on October 1 Sixteen (16) co-ed teams participated in the tournament. ■ Mesa Marin hosted the Police Activities League Adult Slow Tournament on October 25th. Eight (8) teams participated tournament. • Cross Country Invitational Meet: ■ This Meet was held on Saturday, October 4t" at Yokuts Par� runners from all over Kern County. ■ Runner ranged in age from 5 years to 14 years (8t" grade) � competed in either a 1 K, 1.5K, 2K or 3K race. There were many activities to participc six decorated rooms with a different activity for the children to pc in each room. • Good Neighbor Festival: o The Good Neighbor Festival was held on Saturday, October 1 1 t" f p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. o The Southeast Neighborhood Partnership had over fifty (50) vend booths, a petting zoo, face painting and a climbing wall, a cake obstacle course, pony rides, free food, snow cones and popcorn immunization clinic was also provided. o Organizations that helped make this event possible include: Clinic Vista, Kern First 5, Stop the Violence, Stay Focused Ministries, Kern Health Care and the Ebony Counseling Center. Jastro Park • Repairs to defects in tennis court resurfacing were completed by the week of 10/20/ 14. Jefferson Park • Craftworkers removed old serving shelter at reservation area on preparation for future structure to be installed. Kroll Park • A new drinking fountain was installed.
