IN A MULTI -LEVEL TRENCH, UPON INSTALLATION OF FACILITIES ON EACH LEVEL, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
SHADE THE TRENCH TO THE NEXT LEVEL AS SPECIFIED ON THE COMPOSITE DRAWING AND THEN ALLOW
P.G.&E. AND /OR OTHER JOINT TRENCH OCCUPANTS TO INSTALL THEIR RESPECTIVE FACILITIES BEFORE
BACKFILLING THE REMAINDER OF THE TRENCH.
UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, BACKFILL MATERIAL SHALL BE COMPACTED IN TWELVE (12) INCH MAXIMUM
LIFTS TO 90% RELATIVE COMPACTION (ASTM D 1557). THE METHOD OF ACHIEVING SUCH COMPACTION
MAY BE LIMITED BY PARAGRAPHS BELOW OR BY LOCAL AGENCIES HAVING JURISDICTION THEREFOR.
COMPACTION METHODS COMMONLY ACCEPTABLE ARE HAND- TAMPING WITH PNEUMATIC OR VIBRATING
EQUIPMENT OF EACH BACKFILL LIFT. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOT USE ANY COMPACTION METHOD
THAT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO. P.G.&E. AND /OR OTHER JOINT TRENCH OCCUPANT'S FACILITIES.
COMPACTION OF THE BACKFILL MATERIAL SHALL NOT BEGIN UNTIL A MINIMUM OF SIX (6) INCHES OF
COVER IS PLACED OVER THE FACILITIES.
COMPACTING WITH A HYDRAHAMMER OR HEAVY VEHICLE SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE TOP SIX (6) INCHES
OF THE TRENCH UNLESS OTHERWISE AUTHORIZED BY THE ENGINEER.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBILE FOR COORDINATING CONTACT, INSPECTION, AND APPROVAL WITH
THOSE UTILITIES AND /OR PRIVATE COMPANIES WHICH MAY BE AFFECTED BY THE CONTRACTOR'S WORK.
ANY DAMAGE RESULTING FROM THIS CONSTRUCTION WHICH IS DEEMED THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
CONTRACTOR SHALL BE PROMPTLY REPAIRED AT THE CONTRACTOR'S EXPENSE AND NO ADDITIONAL
COMPENSATION WILL BE ALLOWED.
CONTRACTOR IS TO OBTAIN APPROVED PLANS FOR EACH UTILITY FROM EACH UTILITY COMPANY PRIOR TO
COMMENCEMENT OF TRENCHING.
PRIOR TO TRENCHING OPERATIONS THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CALL USA LOCATE AND POTHOLE ALL MARKED
UTILITIES THAT CROSS OR ARE WITHIN FIVE (5) FEET HORIZONTAL DISTANCE OF THE PROPOSED UTILITY
TRENCH. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOCATION SHALL BE ASCERTAINED BY THE CONTRACTOR AHEAD OF
ANY EXCAVATIONS TO VERIFY THAT THE PROPOSED DESIGN DOES NOT CONFLICT WITH ANY UTILITIES. IN
THE EVENT A CONFLICTS EXISTS, THE ENGINEER SHALL BE NOTIFIED IN ORDER TO REDESIGN THE ALIGNMENT.
IF RELOCATION OF EXISTING UTILITIES IS DEEMED NECESSARY BY THE ENGINEER, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE
COMPENSATED FOR INSTRUCTED RELOCATION. IF REDESIGN OF THE ALIGNMENT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL
FITTINGS, PIPE OR EXCAVATION, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE COMPENSATED FOR SAID REVISION. IN THE
EVENT A UTILITY IS DAMAGED, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE WHOLLY RESPONSIBILE FOR ITS REPAIR.
WITH RESPECT TO THE EXISTING FACILITIES OR STRUCTURES, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBILE
FOR BARRICADES OR ANY PROTECTION REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE WORK. ANY DAMAGE TO STRUCTURES
AND /OR FACILITIES OF OTHERS WILL BE SOLELY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR.
CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED BECAUSE OF EXISTING FACILITIES INCLUDING CURB AND GUTTER, PAVING,
P.G. &E. TRANSMISSION LINES. LANDSCAPING, SPRINKLER SYSTEM, SIDEWALK, WALLS, STORM DRAIN, AND
SANITARY SEWER.
7. P.G. &E. SUBSTRUCTURE
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE ALL LABOR, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT AND PERFORM ALL OPERATIONS
REQUIRED TO FURNISH AND INSTALL COMPLETE, ALL SUBSTRUCTURAL COMPONENTS IN COMFORMANCE WITH
P.G. &E.'S SPECIFICATIONS AND DRAWINGS.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE ANY GRADING REQUIRED BY P.G. &E. AROUND JUNCTION BOXES, SPLICE
BOXES, SWITCH ENCLOSURES AND PAD MOUNTS.

BACKFILL MATERIAL) PRIOR TO BACKFILLING.
5. TRENCHING AGENT TO DISPOSE OF ALL SPOIL.
6. MIMIMUM COVER FROM FINAL GRADE REQUIRED FOR ALL FACIL111ES IN THE STREET AREA.
7. TRENCHING AGENT TO SECURE ALL PERMITS.
8. CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CROSSING EXISTING WATER, SEWER, AND STORM DRAIN
LINES, EITHER UNDER OR OVER, AS REQUIRED TO MEET PG &E COVER AND CLEARANCE
REQUIREMENTS, REFER TO G.S. STANDARD 463 -4.
9. THE CONTRACTOR WILL BE REQUIRED TO REMOVE AND REPLACE TRENCH SPOIL WITH
100% SELECT BACKFILL AS REQUIRED BY PG &E SPECIFICATIONS, AND WITH ANY
LOCAL CITY, COUNTY, OR STATE REQUIREMENTS.
10. THE CONTRACTOR WILL BE REQUIRED TO PLACE TEMPORARY AND /OR PERMANENT
PAVING IN ACCORDANCE WITH ANY LOCAL CITY, COUNTY, OR STATE REQUIREMNENTS.
11. APPLICANT TO PROVIDE AND INSTALL ANY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (BARRIER POSTS,
FENCES, ETC -) REQUIRED BY PG &E.
12. THE APPLICANT /CONTRACTOR WILL ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY OF MAINTENANCE OF THE
TRENCH (E.G. COMPACTION, PAVING, ETC.) FOR A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS OR AS
SPECIFIED IN THE PERMIT, WHICHEVER IS LONGER.
13. TRENCHING AGENT TO MAINTAIN THE REQUIRED DISTANCE OF FIVE (5) FEET BETWEN GAS
AND THE WET UTILITES.
NOTES
A. TYPICAL TRENCH SECTIONS ARE DESIGNED FOR INSTALLATIONS WHERE
EACH OCCUPANT IS UTILIZING HIS ENTIRE SPACE ALLOCATION. OTHER
SECTIONS, OR REDUCED DIMENSIONS, MAY BE USED PROVIDED THAT
MINIMUM COVER AND CLEARANCE ARE MAINTAINED AS LISTED.
B. TRENCH MAY BE LOCATED UNDER, PARTLY UNDER, OR CLEAR OF SIDEWALK.

LIFTS TO 90% RELATIVE COMPACTION (ASTM D 1557). THE METHOD OF ACHIEVING SUCH COMPACTION
MAY BE LIMITED BY PARAGRAPHS BELOW OR BY LOCAL AGENCIES HAVING JURISDICTION THEREFOR.
COMPACTION METHODS COMMONLY ACCEPTABLE ARE HAND- TAMPING WITH PNEUMATIC OR VIBRATING

THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBILE FOR COORDINATING CONTACT, INSPECTION, AND APPROVAL WITH

IF RELOCATION OF EXISTING UTILITIES IS DEEMED NECESSARY BY THE ENGINEER, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE
COMPENSATED FOR INSTRUCTED RELOCATION. IF REDESIGN OF THE ALIGNMENT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL
