HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/27/2015AT OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER February 27, 2015 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager Subject: General Information Good News The Bakersfield Police Department’s Citizen Volunteer Unit will begin providing patrol to City parks on March 1st. Citizen volunteers will patrol in clearly marked vehicles. The community is invited to utilize the citizen volunteers as a resource for information and to report crime or suspicious activity. Citizen volunteers will not take enforcement action on crimes in progress, but are equipped to notify the communications center and other police officers. The Bakersfield Condors, owned by the Edmonton Oilers, announced that when Bakersfield moves to the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2015-16, the team name will remain the Bakersfield Condors. The announcement, done at a game with over 8,000 in attendance, was well received by the crowd. The new Emergency Communications Center (ECC) facility, jointly operated by the Bakersfield Fire Department and Kern County Fire, is now fully operational. A ribbon cutting was held February 26th. The dispatch consoles, computers, new phone system, and new CAD system have been installed. The jointly operated facility is a major improvement over the previous structure, and dispatch personnel made from both organizations will provide local residents with the services they require. The project has been largely funded by a grant obtained by County Fire and a special thanks to Deputy Chief, Ross Kelly who was the lead for the City on the project. Please see the attached picture. During the past week, the Southern Sierra mountains gained approximately 0.3 tenths of an inch in snow water equivalent. Two weather modification cloud seeding flights were conducted on February 22nd to stimulate precipitation. The California Department of Water Resources February 26th forecast update estimates that the Kern River will yield around 115,000 acre-feet of water during the April through July runoff season. Last year’s runoff yield was 103,000 General Information February 13, 2015 Page 2 acre-feet during this time period. It is better, but far from good, and the drought continues. This also applies when a large number of street sweeper are in Fleet for repairs. Areas that have been missed during this time will be swept at the end of the month only when possible.
