Reconstruction of Columbus Street between Mount Vernon Avenue ar Street will begin on Monday, April 14th. The estimated date of completi� project is June 23�d. During construction, traffic will be reduced down to c each direction. Access to both businesses and residents along the affect� Columbus will be maintained. Though access to driveways and side stre closed while construction is occurring at that intersection, a detour plan established to allow access to residential neighborhoods. 2. The grand opening ceremony for the new Fire Station No. 5 and Police was very successful. It was very well attended, with Councilmember C Mayor Hall among the guest speakers. Thanks go to everyone who helpE event! 3. A project will begin on April 28th to remove and replace 111 trees along the of Stockdale Highway west of Allen Road and approximately one half of thE Jenkins Road toward Renfro Road. This project is in response to occurrences of irrigation main and lateral line damage due to tree rc Recreation and Parks Department plans to notify residents in the affected Teleminder notifications and by placing door hanger notices on each house 4. Photos of the construction occurring at Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 ar multi-use facility at Saunders Park are enclosed. 5. PARKS DIVISION • Beach Park Skate Park construction documents being finalized for bid • Wayside softball field netting system poles installed. • Six (6} paddle islands replanted with 120 shrubs in the Northeast area • Quailwood Park, Kern River Parkway and other streetscapes abated f� squirrels. • Panama Lane irrigation renovation completed. • Weston Park turf renovation and Patriot's Park new picnic shelter completed. • Stockdale Highway median island irrigation modification completed. • Tree section and Kern River Parkway Foundation jointly sponsored Ar Day 2008 with 140 volunteers and planting of 100 trees. • Staff planted #1,620 (5 gal. shrubs), #334 (1 gal. ground cover), #90 ( gal. trees), #3 (24" box trees). • Staff trimmed #108 trees, cleared #145 trees and removed #15 trees. • Twenty-three (23) attended a tree trimming work shop. • Thirteen (13) candidates interviewed for open Laborer position. • Pre-emergent applied in all streetscapes in Area III. • Irrigation repairs due to vandalism cost over $3,000. • Other vandalism repair costs were over $3,000. AQUATICS • Bakersfield College Diving team started practice and competitions at McMurtrey Pool. • Staff scheduling the "Aquatics Safety Awareness Program" (ASAP) a' local schools. • Overall programming and rentals at McMurtrey increased by 8.3% fro March 2007. • Lap swimming increased by 10.4% over the same time last year. • Garces Hi�gh School held an invitational Diving Meet at McMurtrey on March 31 S . • Kern High School District continues to use Silver Creek Pool for their swim team. • Jefferson Pool is being used by Garces High School swim teams for practice. • McMurtrey had over 700 participants for its "Underwater Eggstravaganza" with over 6,000 eggs. .-, . r- - ---------_ —�••—a:— —a...tC ...,......a:......... DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CENTER • This month's overall attendance has increased 21 % from last year. • Spring camp had over 75 kids per day. "A participants mother told us f daughter wakes up at 5:00 am and begged to be taken to our camp because she was having so much fun with us" • There were over 300 children that participated in the annual SpringtimE Egg Hunt with Mayor Hall donating three (3) bikes as prizes. • Partnering our Parents, a non-profit, served lunch to 80 children during Spring Camp. SILVER CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER • The After School program takes advantage of the nice spring weather I conducting activities outdoor. • Staff initiated a new format of a drop in program during Spring Break w daily attendance averaging 42. • The facility and area was rented sixteen {16) times during the month w an attendance of over 900. • Teen Center is generating more interest everyday, with over 30 in attendance.
