Ciiy Manager's Office
Memorandum
Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager r/(, ,
SUBJECT: Generallnformation
1. We have a difficult agenda for the June 11 th City Council meeting. Be
complexity of the railroad noise issue and an excessive number of public
have structured the agenda like the General Plan Amendment cycle — witr
calendar being considered at the 5:15 meeting. With a heavy workload noi
to streamline the meeting greatly — but that method has worked pretty wE
GPA cycles, so we'll try it!
2. As a reminder, Budget Hearings will be held in the Council Chambers on
9t" at noon. Presentations will be given for the following budgets:
Recreation & Parks, Public Works, and ED/CD.
3. As of next Wednesday, June 11 th, westbound traffic in the area of the SF
Road interchange project will be shifted from the existing highway on
completed ramps. Fairfax Road will be reopened between SR 178 and
Drive, but will now be closed between Auburn Street and the freeway to
continue on the over crossing and freeway improvements. The press relea:
map is enclosed.
4. A new study shows the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area economy, n
all of Kern County, had the greatest improvement among 363 similar areas
over the past five years. Policom, a firm that specializes in analyzing lo
economies, prepared the Economic Strength Rankings. According to Policc
reflects the characteristics of strong and weak economies as well as t
tendency for an area to consistently grow in size and quality. The highest
have had rapid consistent growth in both size and quality, while the lowest
have been in volatile decline. The study found the Bakersfield MSA had
most in the survey's rankings. A boom in the petroleum industry spurred tl
frnm a rankinn nf nth in 2nn4 tn 122nd ir1 2008.

6. With rapidly rising prices on gas, food, and travel related items, families arE
recreate closer to home. What better way to celebrate summer than a frE
movie in the park? In June, there are free concerts on Sundays at Be<
Tuesdays at Silver Creek Park. Free family movies are at various parks on f
and each Wednesday at the Bright House Networks Amphitheater.
McMurtrey Aquatics Center with Family Fun nights and a Float-In movie on
13th. A calendar for June is enclosed with all of the events.
Besides all the special evenings in June, there are pools for swimming
spray parks, day camps, and sport camps. Check the brochure and the wE
there is something for everyone.
7. We just received word that McMurtrey Aquatic Center has been chosen a:
for a McDonald's commercial to be aired during the Olympics. Filming sho
next week on June 11 th or 12th. They want an outdoor Olympic size poc
boards and lanes and McMurtrey fits the bill.
8. The Police Department was chosen as a divisional winner in the C;
Enforcement Challenge that recognizes its efforts to enforce laws and educ
on impaired driving and speeding. Winning programs combine officer tr
information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries. Formal recoc
received during a ceremony later this year in Sacramento.
9. The Police Department has received a grant to continue to pay for per
related to driving under the influence and driver's license checkpoints, drivi
influence saturation patrols, red light enforcement, and aggressive drivE
racing enforcement.
10. The Streets Division work schedule for the week of June 9t" is enclosed.
