After the State finally passed a budget almost three months late, there is now d special session may be called to address shortfalls, according to the attached Sacramento Bee. We do not know how or if they will target local government watching very closely. 2. In September, Bakersfield Police Lieutenant Hajir Nuriddin traveled to Bots�n instruct at the International Law Enforcement Academy. Lt. Nuriddin was person the Federal Bureau of Investigation to travel with its instructors to Africa an academy. Lt. Nuriddin was the only member of a local law enforcement agenc States to provide training at the academy. The academy was attended by I� personnel from seven African countries. 3. Bright House Networks has informed us in the enclosed memo that its rates will reflect certain programming additions. 4. The Recreation and Parks Department is being honored by the American Softl (ASA) for significantly increasing participation over the past year in softball leagu will be presented on Saturday, October 11 t" in San Luis Obispo. 5. The Recreation and Parks Department is partnering with Garden Pathways in class skateboarders to Bakersfield. These young adults will give demonstration� to youth in attendance about positive life choices. They will start at the Good NE on Saturday, October 18th at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at around 10:00 a.m, move to the Garden Pathways facility on "O" Street from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. The � press release and announcement card has more details. Fiscal news grows worse for California By Kevin Yamamura - kyamamura@sacbee.com Published 12;00 am PDT Wednesday, October 8, 2008 Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata estimated Tuesday the state will face a$3 billion to � this fiscal year without corrective action, a significant gap that increases the possibility lawr to consider new spending cuts or tax increases in a special midyear budget session. State Controller John Chiang, meanwhile, announced California has taken in $1.1 billion les first quarter than state officials projected earlier this year. The bad fiscal news came as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders prepared to discuss whether to call a special session to negotiate ways to close the latest budget gap to discuss how the state can obtain a$7 billion short-term loan in the wake of a worldwide a separate issue from the revenue problem. The Republican governor two weeks ago signed the tardiest state budget in state history, spending plan that assumed stronger revenues than the state is currently taking in. Lawmakers relied heavily on accounting maneuvers and cuts to state services to break a nE month deadlock. Majority-party Democrats and Schwarzenegger called for new taxes, but t those demands in September when they determined Republicans would not agree to them. Perata, an Oakland Democrat, further predicted that California faces a$15 billion to $18 bil shortfall through June 2010, comparable to the $15.2 billion deficit lawmakers faced this pa expressed little optimism that Republicans would support tax increases if the governor calls session.
