Jul 5, 2011 Written by pcampbell 11 Comments Recc^^:nu 11 °^^ Have you seen the storefront on Vne St. in the Gateway Quarter that promises Bakersfield, a tequila and bourbon bar, coming soon? It's next door to Lavomatic. We'd reported it was coming, a restaurant from the Lanni brothers, local guys who own the restaurant chain Currito. I talked to Joe Lanni last week, who described what they're going for. First, watch this video Good stuff, and you've got to like the outfits. Bakersfield is an agricultural city in California where a style of country music evolved that was a reaction to the slick Nashville sound. Bakersfield musicians were rebels with more of a rock and roll than pop attitude. Buck Owens was the main guy, but Merle Haggard and others had the Bakersfield sound, too. IYs California country music, and Iots of people into retro-country cool have rediscovered it over the years. The sound, and definitely the outfits, also have a big Mexican influence. (Listen to "Streets of Bakersfield") So it makes sense as inspiration for someone opening a Mexican/bar restaurant and looking for a slightly different angle on it. Joe Lanni said they love Nada, downtown, and didn't want to go head-to-head with them, or try to offer truly authentic Mexican Mexican. And they weren't looking to open a combination plate- type Mexican restaurant. So Cal-Mex works. Lanni said they'll serve food that could make a meal or a late-night snack—Mexican street food with some modern modifications. You'll be able to order one taco at a time if you want. Or you can order super-premium tequila. They'll have nice craft beers, and maybe a nightly $2 draft. They're working on the space now, which was previously a gift shop, though they're only using part of that space. It will be larger than neighbor Senate, he said, but smaller than other neighbor A Tavola. Though the Lannis are franchising their national chain restaurant, Bakersfield is just a one-off. "It's really just for fun. We both used to live downtown," said Lanni. "And we're just really excited about being part of what's going on down there." It will open, probably, in September. I think all the servers should wear Nudie outfits with plenty of rhinestones.
