HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/23/2015 OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER December 23, 2015 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager AT Subject: General Information MERRY CHRISTMAS Notable Items  City offices will be closed this Thursday and Friday, December 24th and 25th in observance of the Christmas Holiday, and next Thursday and Friday, December 31st and January 1st in observance of the New Year.  As a reminder, there will be no trash pickup on December 25th and January 1st. Services will be provided the following day, Saturday, December 26th and January 2nd.  Grand Island Village is a development at Buena Vista Road and Ming Avenue that is owned by Bolthouse Properties LLC. They have had great success with their commercial development, so much so that they have a need for more parking. The City owns Fire Station 15, immediately to the north of the development. Behind the station and Grand Island Village is an area of City-owned property that is not needed by the City. Other than watering and mowing it, it is otherwise unused. It would benefit the City to turn this liability (water and mowing costs) into an asset (sale proceeds and making the property taxable). To that end, the City temporarily leased the property to Bolthouse so they can meet immediate parking needs. A sales agreement will come forward to the City Council in the future, after the appropriate zone change on the property. General Information December 23, 2015 Page 2 Please call if you have questions or concerns. An aerial photograph is attached for reference.  The Bakersfield Police Department, along with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and W.A. Thompson Distributors delivered 450 Christmas food baskets to families in need throughout Kern County on December 17th. This was the 31st year of collaboration between these three organizations, which was made possible through generous donations from benefit associations, volunteer organizations, and business owners in Kern County. Bakersfield Police Department employees and their families donated their time in preparing the baskets the night before the main event. Employees that day either stayed over after working all night or came in early before their shift to make sure the baskets were delivered early in the morning. Coinciding with this event, Department personnel held a toy drive for the children of these needy families receiving baskets. Over 1,000 toys were collected over a two week period. Toys not distributed were donated to the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Toy Distribution.  On December 19th the Bakersfield Police Activities League (PAL) held their 18th Annual Shop with a Cop event. Seventy-eight officers from the Bakersfield Police Department volunteered to join 60 children from PAL to assist them with shopping at the East Hills Mall Wal-Mart. Each child received $125 to spend on Christmas gifts for themselves or their families. The money was generously donated by Children’s Advocates Resource Endowment (C.A.R.E.) and Wal-Mart.
