Scope of work: Complete all landscaping work as shown on the drawings and as specified herein. 2. General requirements: A. All plants furnished by contractor shall be true to name. Conform to standardized plant names by American joint committee on horticulture nomenclature. All work shall conform to applicable requirements of American Association of Nurserymen, Inc. standards. B. All nursery stock and other plant materials shall be subject to inspection by City Of Bakersfield Parks Division prior to being removed from containers and placed in ground. All plants shall be free of disease and insects of any kind, and all necessary inspection certificates shall accompany each shipment as required by law. C. Provide plants of normal growth and uniform height, according to species, with straight primary trunks and well - developed leaders, roots and tops. Heeled -!n stock or stock from cold storage shall not be accepted. D. Provide plants of sizes specified or listed on drawings, size stated in each case being interpreted to mean dimensions of plants as it stands in its natural position in nursery without straightening of any branches or leaders. E. Provide legible labels attached to all plants, specimens bundles, boxes, bales, or other containers indicated botanical genus, species and size of each. 3. Preparation of subsoil: When subgrade has been established by others and approved, smooth over to remove ridges and depressions so surface is parallel to finish grade. 4. Grades: Finish grades for all project prior to planting or hydroseeding, unless otherwise approved by the City Parks Division, shall be no less the 'W' below hard surface, and not more than 1" below hard surface, i.e. cement slab, sidewalk, concrete header. 5. Digging and shipping of plant material: A. Exercise extreme care in digging, transporting, handling and packing of all plants. B. Handle plants so roots are protected at all times, and delivery is in open vehicles, cover entire load, but not be so tight as to cause heating. C. No plant will be accepted when ball of earth surrounding roots has been cracked or broken preparatory to or during the process of planting or when burlap, staves, ropes or platforms have been removed. Protect root balls from sun and wind by covering with soil or other suitable material if not planted immediately on delivery. 6. Planting areas: Planting areas mean pits for individual trees, sh r ubs and vines or lawn areas shown on drawings or specifications. Locate all such areas shown on drawings and stake out for approval by City of Bakersfield prior to planting. 7. Preparation of lawn and groundcover areas: A. All topsoil brought to the job shall be a fertile, friable natural sandy loam, without admixture of subsoil material, and obtained not more than two or three feet from the top of the deposit and from a well- drained arable site. It shall be live soil and contain a normal amount of decomposed organic matter and shall be free from heavy alkaline soil, coarse sand, stones, lumps, tools, sticks or other foreign matter. B. Soil amendments: All areas to be planted and irrigated shall receive soil amendments. The following soil amendments shall be incorporated per 1,000 square feet of soil surface area. 1. Four (4) cubic yards organic amendments. Materials shall be organic wood based product consisting of redwood or fir only. Material shall contain no manure of any kind, weed seeds, or any foreign substance. Maximum particle size shall be 1/4 ". Product shall contain a minimum 1 % available nitrogen. 2. 200 pounds agricultural gypsum. 3. 10 pounds soil sulfur. 4. 150 pounds Gro -power Plus or an approved equal. C. Any soil brought to site must be from an area approved by the City Parks Division. D. Over prepared subgrade, topsoil shall be spread to such a depth that seeding or plants, and after area has been compacted and planted, surface shall conform to lines and grades designated. E. After spreading topsoil, condition with commercial fertilizer at the rate of fifteen (15) pounds per 1,000 square feet, which shall then be thoroughly rototiled into the topsoil. F.After topsoil has been spread, the area shall be lightly raked to remove all additional stones, roots, lumps or any other foreign material. The finished surface shall be loose, smooth and pulverized. 8. Lawns: A. Seeding: The preparation of the subsoil and lawn areas shall be done just prior to the actual seeding which shall be done at a time favorable to the growth of the grass and only at the time approved by the City of Bakersfield. B. Hydroseeding: 1. Prepare seedbed as previously described. 2. Hydroseed mix for turf areas shall be as follows: 1/3 Unhulled Common Bermuda 1/3 Creeping Red fescue 1/3 Kentucky Bluegrass 3. Mix shall be mechanically applied at the rate of 450 pounds per acre. 4. Mix shall include the following Wood Cellulose Mulch: 1800 pounds Ecology Controls "M Binder ": 500 pounds per acre 20 -10 -5 fertilizer: 500 pounds per acre. 5. Hydraulic equipment to be used for the application of the slurry mix shall have a built in agitation system to agitate mix and entire unit shall be mounted on mobile unit. 6. The operator shall spray with a uniform visible coat using the green color of the wood pulp as a guide. The slurry shall be applied in a sweeping motions, in an arched stream so as to fall like rain, allowing the wood fibers to build on each other until a good coat is achieved and the material is spread at the required rate per acre. 7. Prior to hydroseeding, the area shall be irrigated in order to provide a moist seed bed for the hydroseed application. 8. Hydroseed areas shall receive several consecutive waterings the day of the hydroseeding to thoroughly saturate the soil. 9. After initial irrigation, water shall be applied as often, and in sufficient amounts as conditions may require, to keep the soil wet and until germination is complete. C. Sod: 1. Prepare seedbed as previously described, but work for a surface' /4' lower than surrounding paving. 2. Spread a layer of complete fertilizer (same amount as label calls for new lawn). 3. Unroll delivered sod on prepared seedbed. 4. Lay strips parallel with strips end staggered as in a bricklayers running bond pattern. 5. Press end of each strip closely against the end of the last strip. 6. Roll with half water filled roller, weight not to exceed 250 pounds. 7. Water until rots have been penetrated deeply into the prepared seedbed. 9. Planting: A. All trees shall be set slightly higher than the finished grade. No filling around the trunks will be permitted. B. All shrubs shall be set slightly higher than the finished grade. No filling around the stems will be permitted. Topsoil shall be carefully tamped under and around plants to fill all voids. C. Bottom of all plant area shall be loosened and a layer of topsoil at least two inches in thickness added to each pit so ball or roots will rest thereon when plant is set to required grade. D. All trees shall be planted in pits at least one and one -half (1- 1/2) feet greater in diameter than their ball of earth or spread of roots. When the tree has been properly set and inspected, the pit shall be backfilled with topsoil to which has been added the bonemeal and gypsum at the rate of fifty (50) pounds per cubic yard of topsoil. Soil shall be thoroughly tamped and watered; after backfilling, a mound of earth shall be formed around the edge of each tree pit in order to form a shallow saucer. E. All trees 24" box and smaller shall be surrounded by stakes, se details. F. All trees within turf areas, shall receive Arbor -gard or approved equal, trunk protectors. 10. Mulching: After the work of planting has been completed and approved, all shrub beds shall receive a top dressing of Forest Humus (1 ") one inch deep. 11. Planted area boarders: All planting boarders shall be 6 "x6" concrete strips. See City standard L -11, detail #O -O. Where turf is adjacent to a wall or fence, a 9 "x9" mow strip is required. See City standards L -11, detail N -N. A 6 "x6" mow curb is required anywhere City maintenance responsibilities end. For phased projects, mow curbs will be required, even if not called out on plans, at phase lines to be removed upon beginning of construction of next adjacent phase. 12. No shrub shall be placed any closer than '/2 is diameter at maturity to any hard surface. Final placement of plant materials shall be approved by the City of Bakersfield, and the City reserves the right to require the deletion or addition of plant material to achieve desired plant density. 13. Spacing on trees and shrubs shall be not less than their diameter at maturity. 14. Groundcover plants shall be planted a minimum of 12" from any walkways and all irrigation equipment. 15. Pruning: Prune all plant materials. Only skilled workmen shall do this work under the direction of the landscape contractor. Irrigation s ecifications General Notes: 1. Scope of work: Includes furnishing all labor, materials and equipment for the proper installation of the irrigation system. The work includes, but is not necessarily limited to the following: A. Trenching and backfill. B. Automatically controlled irrigation system. C. Test all systems and make operative. D. "As- built" drawings. 2. Guarantee: All work shall be guaranteed for one year from date of acceptance against all defects in material, equipment and workmanship. Guarantee shall also cover repair of damage to any part of the premises resulting from leaks or other defects in material, equipment and workmanship to the satisfaction of the owner. All repairs, if required, shall be done promptly at no cost to the City of Bakersfield. 3. General: A. Permits and fees: Obtain all permits and pay the required fees to any governmental agency having jurisdiction over the work. Inspections being required by local ordinances during the course of construction shall be arranged as required. On the completion of work, satisfactory evidence shall be furnished to the City of Bakersfield to insure that all work has been installed in accordance with the ordinances and local code requirements. B. Approval: Wherever the terms "approval" or "approved" are used in the specifications, they shall mean the approval of the City of Bakersfield in writing. C. Before any work begins, a conference shall be held between the contractor and the City of Bakersfield concerning the work under this contract. D. Coordination: Coordinate and cooperate with all other contractors to enable the work to proceed as rapidly and efficiently as possible. E. Inspection of site: Contractor shall acquaint himself with all site conditions. He shall call U.S.A. prior to construction to locate all underground utilities. Should site utilities not shown on the plans be found during excavations, contractor shall promptly notify the City of Bakersfield for instructions as to further action. Failure to do so will make the contractor liable for any and all damage thereto arising from his operations subsequent to discovery of such utilities not shown in plans. F. Protection of existing plants and site conditions: The contractor shall take necessary precautions to protect site conditions as they exist. Any work covered without the approval of the City Park Division is subject to being uncovered for inspection at the discretion of the City Parks Division. J. Final acceptance: Final acceptance of the work may be obtained from the City of Bakersfield upon the satisfactory completion of all work, thereby prompting commencement of the maintenance period. K. All points o f connection for electrical service for irrigation systems shall be independent from m traffic signal power source /street lighting power source. A single line schematic for the electrical power supply for irrigation systems shall be reviewed and approved by the City Engineer prior to the start of any landscape /irrigation installations. 4. Materials: A. General: All materials throughout the system shall be new and in perfect condition. No deviations from the specification shall be allowed without the approval of the City of Bakersfield. B. Plastic fittings: All fittings to be schedule 40 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) standard weight as manufactured by Sloane, Lasco or an approved equal. C. Solvent cement: Compatible with PVC pipe and of proper consistency. See City of Bakersfield detail sheet for acceptable installation procedures of all aspects of irrigation. 5. Point of Connection A. In the event the point of connection to the city water supply is to be somewhere other than where specified on the plans, the contractor shall receive written approval from the City Parks Division prior to installation of the point of connection. B. The water meter for the landscape irrigation shall be located in the landscape area shown on plans. C.When possible backflow presenters shall be located in planter areas. 6. Installation A. Excavating and trenching: 1. Perform all excavations as required for the installation of work included under this section. Including shoring of earth banks to prevent cave -ins. Restore all surfaces, existing underground installations, etc., damage or cut as a result of the excavations to their original condition and in a manner approved by the City of Bakersfield. B. Pipe line assembly: 1. Install remote control valves where shown and group together where practical. Place them no closer than 12 inches to the walk edges, building and walls. 2.Plastic pipe and fittings shall be solvent welded using solvents and methods as recommended by manufacturer of the pipe, except where screwed connections are required. Pipe and fittings shall be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust and moisture before applying solvent with non - synthetic bristle brush. 3. Pipe may be assembled and welded on the surface. Snake pipe from side to side of trench bottom to allow for expansion and contraction. 4. Make all connections between plastic pipe and valves or steel pipe with threaded fitting using plastic female adapters with schedule 80 nipples. See details L -7 and L -5. C. Sprinkler Heads 1. Install all sprinklers as detailed In City of Bakersfield L -7. Sprinkler heads adjacent to curbs and other paved areas shall be to grade. Sprinkler heads which are to be installed in lawn areas where turf has not yet been established shall be four inches above the proposed finished grade during establishment period, and lowered to grade upon completion of project. 2. All sprinklers having adjusting pin nozzles shall have the pins adjusted into the stream for proper and adequate distribution at the water over the coverage pattern at the sprinkler, 3. All sprinklers having an adjusting screw, adjusting stem or adjusting friction collars shat be adjusted on a lateral line or circuit as required for the proper arc of coverage, radius. Diameter and /or gallonage discharge. D. Closing of pipe and flushing lines 1. Cap or plug openings as soon as all lines have been installed to prevent the entrance of materials that would obstruct the pipe. Leave them in place until removal is necessary' for the completion of the installation. 2. Thoroughly flush out all water lines before installing heads, valves and other hydrants. 3. Test all work in accordance with City of Bakersfield requirements. 4. Upon completion of the testing the contractor shall complete assembly and adjust all sprinkler heads for proper distribution. 7. Workmanship A. Lay out work as accurately as possible to the working drawings. The drawings, though carefully drawn, are generally diagrammatic to the extent that swing joints, offsets and all fittings are not shown, B. The contractor shall be responsible for full and complete coverage of all irrigated areas and shall make any necessary minor adjustments. The City of Bakersfield reserves the right to require the addition or deletion of irrigation heads to achieve proper coverage. C. Any major revisions to the irrigation system must be submitted and answered in written form. 8. Backfill and Compacting A. After the system is operating and at required tests and inspections have been made, backfill all excavations and trenches with clean soil, free of all rubbish. B. Compact all trenches in areas to be planted by thoroughly flooding the backfill. Jetting process may be used in those areas. C. Dress off all areas to finish grades. 9. Cleanup: Remove from the site all debris resulting from work of this section. 10. Hydrostatic Tests A. Request the presence of the City of Bakersfield in writing at least 48 hours in advance of testing. B. Testing to be accomplished at the expense of the contractor and in the presence of the City of Bakersfield. C, Center load piping with a small amount of backfill to prevent arching or slipping under pressure. All joints shall remain open. All valves or valve locations shall remain open. D. Apply a continuous and static water pressure of 60 PSI when welded plastic joints have cured at at least 24 hours and with the risers capped as follows: Main lines and sub mains shall be tested for at least 1 hour. E. Repair any leaks resulting from the tests. F. Demonstrate the entire system to the City of Bakersfield, proving that all remote control valves are properly balanced, that all heads are properly adjusted for radius and arc of coverage and that the installed system is workable, clean and efficient. 11. Electric Meter A. The electric meter shall be placed as indicated on the plans and shall conform to all applicable City and agency standards for installation. B. The irrigation controller and the electric meter shall be placed immediately adjacent to one another, 12. Quick couplers A. All quick coupler valves shall be located in planter areas whenever possible. B. At completion of the project, the contractor shall provide the City with two (2) quick coupler keys. 13. Coverage A. The contractor shall flush out and adjust all sprinkler heads and valves for optimum coverage with minimum over spray This shall include regulating the pressure at each valve to obtain the optimum operating pressure for each circuit. B. Prior to commencement of the maintenance period, the contractor shall demonstrate the irrigation system coverage. The contractor shall notify the City Parks Division twenty-four (24) hours prior to such test. C. The City Parks Division shall have final approval of coverage. Maintenance Period 1. The contractor shall provide all labor, materials and equipment to perform work during the post - installment maintenance period, as specified herein including but not limited to: adequate watering of plant material and controlling weeds, rodents and other pests for a minimum period of three hundred and sixty-five (365) days. 2. The contractor shall maintain the project on a continuous basis from the first day after planting is completed, until final written acceptance by the City of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks Department. 3. Cost incurred due to damage or replacement during the post - installation maintenance period shall be the responsibility of the contractor. 4. All areas including, but not limited to turf, groundcover areas, concrete walks and slabs shall be kept clean and free of weeds, litter, and debris. 5. Before weeds exceed two (2) inches in height, they shall be removed and disposed of offsite. Serious weeds pests (i.e. blackberry, nut sedge or bind weeds) shall be spot sprayed with a non - selective post- emergent herbicide as specified by a weed abatement company, and left in place for (7) seven days. Areas sprayed shall remain unwatered for a minimum of forty -eight (48) hours. Dead weeds shall be removed seven (7) days after application and disposed of off -site. 6. Constant diligence shall be maintained for the advent of diseases, insects, and /or rodent infestations and proper preventative or control measures taken. Should the City, during the maintenance period, discover that the terms for the maintenance period as stated herein have not been strictly adhered to, then the days accruing toward completion of said maintenance period will be terminated. The maintenance period will be extended one (1) day for each day the area is out of its maintenance period. After the area has been brought up to City standard, The City will require a re- inspection by a City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks representative. When the inspection is completed, and the area is in satisfactory condition, then, and only then, will the City re- accept the area in writing. 7. The contractor shall properly and completely maintain all parts of the irrigation system. 8. The contractor shall provide for delivery of water in sufficient quantities and adjust water application to compensate for seasonal conditions. 9.
