HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/10/2016AT OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER November 10, 2016 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information * In honor of Veterans Day, City offices will be closed on Friday, November 11th * Notable Items  The post-election count of provisional and absentee ballots seems to drag out formal election results. Nonetheless with 100% of precincts reporting, it seems appropriate to Congratulate Councilmember Jacquie Sullivan on her re-election. We would also like to congratulate and welcome Councilmembers-elect Andrae Gonzales and Jeff Tkac. With respect to the new Mayor-elect the formal congratulations may take another week or longer. Congratulations for a competitive race seems in order however for both Karen Goh and Kyle Carter.  The Thomas Roads Improvement Project (TRIP) team received another award. The Central California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) recognized the SR 99/Hosking Avenue Interchange with the 2016 Transportation Project of the Year Award for projects between $5 million and $25 million. This is the third year in a row that a TRIP project has been recognized by the Chapter: the SR 178/Morning Drive Interchange and the Westside Parkway received awards in preceding years. The APWA awards were established to recognize excellence in management and administration of public works projects between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer and the contractor. Congratulations to everyone involved on this important addition to our transportation network.  As a reminder, the Bakersfield Marathon/Half Marathon is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 13th. The event organizers are expecting close to 2,000 participants. There will be road closures associated with the event which are anticipated to begin at 5:00 a.m. on the day of the event and will reopen on a rolling basis. Drivers are urged to be aware of the road closures, take alternate routes if possible and follow all law enforcement and race official directions. Page 2 General Information November 10, 2016 Residents with inquiries regarding road closures are encouraged to contact the event organizers at directors@activebakersfield.org or call (661) 249-6450. Additional information is included in the enclosed flyer or by going to https://runsignup.com/Race/BakersfieldMarathonandHalf/Page-19.  The renovated inclusive playground at Wayside Park is designated as a National Demonstration Site for meeting best practices in design and program elements. Highlights feature the Bakersfield Sound with several musical instruments, plenty of access ramps and rubberized surfacing providing full ADA accessibility for children ages 2 to 12 years old in separate play areas for the younger ages. A specially designed new play feature is an “expression swing” where an adult can swing while looking at his or her child in a safe toddler swing. This expression swing is the first one in Bakersfield, with more to come in future locations.  In response to automobile thefts in the greater metropolitan Bakersfield area, the Bakersfield Police Department, in coordination with the Kern County Auto Theft Taskforce (KCATT), the National Crime Insurance Bureau, Bill Wright Toyota, Jaco Oil/Fastrip, Motor City GMC, and Barber Honda, are gifting a limited number of the auto theft deterrent devices known as “The Club” to registered owners of certain vehicle makes and models.
