HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/24/2017AT OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER February 24, 2017 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  Diagrams are enclosed showing the advancement of the demolition work on the Centennial Corridor. Tremendous progress has been made to date and the work is continuing. It is also expected that the first demolition for 24th Street will occur next week. For more information regarding the Thomas Roads Improvement Program, please click on the following link: http://www.bakersfieldcity.us/gov/depts/public_works/bakersfield_freeways/ home.htm  Attached is a survey of City garbage fees. This list is expanded from the one normally given out at budget time. Of the 36 jurisdictions, Bakersfield has the lowest rates! Congratulations to Public Works Sanitation staff.  On February 16th, Bakersfield SPCA announced that it received a $60,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to help spay and neuter feral and community cats within the City of Bakersfield. This grant will fund spay and neuter surgeries for 833 unowned cats through Critters Without Litters to reduce shelter intake at The City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center. Julie Johnson, Executive Director of the Bakersfield SPCA and City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center, stated “this grant provides a much-needed safety net for caretakers of feral cat colonies and those cats in neighborhoods that typically have no owner, but may visit and be fed by several owners.” Please click below to see the article written by the Bakersfield Californian. http://www.bakersfield.com/news/city-residents-can-fix-feral-cats-for- free/article_c1e2ad89-d7e3-56df-84ef-3867699a2290.html General Information February 24, 2017 Page 2  On February 16th, Country singer Blake Shelton performed in front of a sold out crowd at the Rabobank Arena. There were over 9,500 people in attendance and it was the kick-off to his “Doing it to Country Songs” tour. We are excited to see other upcoming artists that are expected to do well, including Elton John, Lady Antebellum, and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.  Last night, the Kern River Parkway Bike Path was closed at the Calloway Drive undercrossing due to excessive water in the Kern River. City staff is evaluating methods to divert the water around the bike path. However, the undercrossing will be closed until further notice due to the high level of flows expected in the Kern River. A detour is in place to divert pedestrians and bicyclists to cross at the Stockdale Highway intersection and then back to the bike path on the other side of Calloway. General Information February 24, 2017 Page 3 Traffic Advisories  Expect Short Delays for Paving on State Route 178 The contractor for the State Route 178 Widening project will be paving the south side of State Route 178, between Canteria Drive and Alfred Harrell Highway, from Tuesday, February 28th through Friday, March 3rd. On Tuesday, February 28th, the contractor will also be working on the pavement in the vicinity of the State Route 178 and Alfred Harrell Highway intersection. The contractor will also be grinding pavement on State Route 178 at Park Palisades on Tuesday in preparation of installing a new median at this location. These activities will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will require flagging personnel to stop traffic. Motorists traveling through these areas should stay alert and be prepared to stop. Delays are not expected to last longer than 10 minutes.
