BACKFILL MATERIAL ABOVE THE PIPE ZONE SHALL BE FREE OF DELETERIOUS MATERIALS AND LUMPS OR STONES EXCEEDING THREE (3) INCHES IN GREATEST DIMENSION AND SHALL BE PLACED IN LAYERS NOT EXCEEDING EIGHTEEN (18) INCHES. EACH LAYER SHALL BE THOROUGHLY COMPACTED BY VIBRATORY OR MECHANICAL TAMPING, OR BY A COMBINATION OF THESE METHODS. FLOODING AND JETTING SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED. THERE MUST BE AT LEAST ONE FOOT OF COVER OVER THE PIPE BEFORE COMPACTION ABOVE THE PIPE ZONE WILL BE ALLOWED. IMPORTED BEDDING AND BACKFILL MATERIAL SHALL BE OBTAINED, AND ANY EXCESS BEDDING AND BACKFILL MATERIAL SHALL BE DISPOSED, BY ANY LEGAL MEANS AT THE DISPOSAL OF THE CONTRACTOR.
