PUBLIC STATEMENTS There were no public statements. 3. AGENDA SUMMARY REPORT The Commission adopted the March 6, 2017 report 4. NEW BUSINESS A. Annual Youth Conference Commissioners; Collins, Garcia, and Edmonston presented their recommendations for the Youth Conference. Commissioner Ruiz stated that one activity could be a tour of downtown Bakersfield. Ruiz also thought a shorter agenda would be more manageable and appropriate since this is the first conference that included a keynote speaker and community project. Caleb Blaschke suggested light refreshments and utilizing a City venue. He also stated that staff will review the Commission’s recommendations and return at the May meeting with a draft agenda for the Youth Conference that incorporates the Commissions ideas. 5. COMMISSION COMMENTS - Commissioner Collins requested an update regarding on her referral, whether or not, Bakersfield could implement a program similar to Sacramento, where leftover food from schools is given to the homeless. - Caleb Blaschke, Management Assistant asked the seniors to inform him if they are leaving this summer so recruitment can begin for their replacements. - Chair Reyes commented that Commissioner Frink has resigned from the Commission and Marisa Edmonson is now the acting Commissioner for Ward 2. 6. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 4:39 p.m. OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER MEMORANDUM April 27, 2017 TO: Bakersfield Youth Commission FROM: Caleb Blaschke, Management Assistant SUBJECT: Annual Youth Conference BACKGROUND On February 6, 2017, the Youth Commission formed an ad hoc committee to perform research on creating an agenda for the Commissions annual Youth Conference. On April 3, 2017, the ad hoc committee presented their recommendations to the full Commission for discussion. Through the input and statements made during the discussion, staff prepared a draft agenda for the Youth Conference. Highlights include different venues with different service projects, opportunities for engagement with youth from Bakersfield and a public speaker. The conference is scheduled to be less than four hours. RECOMMENDATION City staff recommends that the Youth Commission decide the venue, service project and approve the agenda for the Youth Conference (Exhibit A). Exhibit A 2017 Youth Conference Agenda Paving the Way Date: Saturday, August 26th, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Location: Option 1: Martin Luther King Center Option 2: Park at River Walk Option 3: City Hall North (Options for Locations coincide with Service Projects) Agenda: 8:00 a.m. Option 1: Service Project “Neighborhood Clean-up” Option 2: Service Project “Park and River Clean-up” Option 3: Historic Tour of Downtown Bakersfield/Clean-up 9:00 a.m. Mingle and Refreshments 10:00 a.m. Welcome from the Youth Commission o Outreach Activities (Booths: Recreation and Parks, Police, Public Works, Fire, Water, County Youth Council, Bike Bakersfield) 11:00 a.m. Speaker (CSUB Basketball Coach, Derick Carr, Councilmember Rivera) 11:30 a.m. Youth Commission Closing Remarks and Adjournment Outreach: Outreach for the Annual Youth Conference will consist of the following: Youth Commission Member Outreach, Email to School Councilors/Principals/Kern Superintendent of Schools, Press Releases, Social Media Postings
