An Ordinance of the Council of the City of Bakersfield
~nending Section 15.36.010, 15.36.030, 15.36.040,
15.36.050, 15.36.060, 15.36.070, and 15.36.090 of the
Bakersfield Municipal Code regarding the Uniform Sign Code.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield
SECTION 1.
Section 15.36.010 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code is hereby
amended to read as follows:
15.36.010 A~loption.
Except as provided in this chapter, that certain Uniform Sign Code
known and designated as the Uniform Sign Code, 1985 Edition, sponsored and
copyrighted by the International Conference of Building Officials, as modified
and amended in this chapter, three copies of which are filed in the office of
the City Clerk of the City for use and examination by the public, is adopted by
reference and is declared to be the sign code of the City for the purpose of
regulating the construction, maintenance, use and removal of signs.
SECTION 2.
Section 15.36.30 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code is hereby amended to read
as follows:
15.36. 030 Exemptions to Permit ~quir~nent.
The following signs shall not require a sign permit. These exenlotions shall
not be construed as relieving the owner of the sign from the responsibility of its
erection and maintenance under this chapter and cc~pliance by the owner with the
provisions of this chapter or any other applicable law or ordinance regulating the
sar~.
A. The changing of the advertising copy or n~ssage on a printed sign only;
except for theater marquees and similar signs specifically designed for the use
of replaceable copy, electric signs shall not be included in this exception;
B. Repainting or cleaning of an advertising structure or the changing of the
aJvertising copy or message theron shall not be considered an erection or alteration
which requires sign permit unless a structural change is made;
C. Signs less than six feet above grade and not exceeding twelve square feet
in area;
D. Real estate signs not exceeding twelve square feet in area which advertise
the sale, rental, or lease of the premises upon which said signs are located;
E. Professional name plates not exceeding two s~re feet in area;
F. Bulletin boards not over twelve square feet in area for public, charitable
or religious institutions when the same are located on the premises of said
institutions;
G. Signs denoting the architect, engineer or contractor when placed upon work
under construction and not exceeding twelve s~mre feet in area and less than six
feet above grade;
H. Memorial signs or tablets, names of buildings and date of erection when cut
into masonry surface, or when constructed of bronze or other incombustible materials;
I. Signs of public service con~panies indicating danger, and aids to service or
safety.
SECTION 3.
Section 15.36.040 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
15.36. 040 Permit Fees
A fee for each sign permit shall be paid to the building official as set
forth in the schedule Table No. 3-A of the "Uniform Building Code" as amended.
SECTION 4.
Section 15.36.050 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
15.36.050 Plan Check Fees
Plan checking fees shall he paid in accordance with Section 304 (c) of the
"Uniform Building Code" as amended.
SECtiON 5.
Sect/on 15.36.060 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code entitled Table No. 4-B
amended - "Projection of Signs" is hereby deleted in its entirety.
SECTION 6.
Sect/on 15.36. 070 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code entitled Table No. 4-C
amended - "Projection Sign Thickness" is hereby deleted in its entirety.
SECtiON 7.
Section 15.36.090 of the Bakersfield Municipal Code entitled "Signs Needing
Approval of City Council" is hereby deleted in its entirety.
SECTION 8.
This ordinance shall be posted in accordance with the City Charter provisions
and shall become effective thirty (30) days fr~n and after the date of its passage.
