HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/28/2017AT/CH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER July 28, 2017 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items This week City staff from the Departments of Public Works, Recreation and Parks, Community Development and City Manager’s Office toured various Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) funded project sites with staff from Congressman David Valadao’s office. The tour provided an opportunity to showcase the positive impact these federal funds continue to have within the community. City staff fielded several questions and will remain available should the Congressman’s office have further inquiries. While we are fortunate that Bakersfield just experienced an unprecedented rain season, the volume of water did create various infrastructure issues. We are pleased to announce the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is reimbursing the City approximately $60,000 for levee repairs in southwest Bakersfield adjacent to the Kern River (also known as the “2,800 acres” area). We appreciate our partnership with Cal OES and FEMA and look forward to continue working with these agencies in the future. Today kicks off the third of seven weekend sessions of the Jehovah’s Witness Watchtower Convention at Rabobank Arena. This is the largest group that meets in Bakersfield. Local hotels and restaurants have been busy during the group’s previous two weekends in our Bakersfield, and this level of activity is expected to continue this weekend. The dates of the remaining events are August 4-6, August 11-13, August 18-20, and August 25-27. Good news! The City received a grant from USA Swimming Foundation Make-A- Splash Program for approximately $3,000 to provide 80 discounted swim lessons for eligible children 3 to 17 years of age. Another session has been added at McMurtrey Aquatic Center and three new classes will be offered: 4:45 p.m., 5:25 p.m., and 6:10 p.m. Registration will begin for these new classes on Monday, August 7th. For more information, please call (661) 852-7430.
