This week marks the 27th year that our Sister City – Wakayama, Japan – has sent over
students, ages ranging from 12 to 17, for a summer study program in Bakersfield. A
total of 27 students and two chaperones stayed with local families and visited
various parks, Murray Farms, McMurtrey Aquatic Center, and participated in fun
events. Finally, Mr. Hiroyoshi Akedo was honored for his fifteen visits to Bakersfield
while also celebrating his 65th birthday.

Westside Parkway/Truxtun Avenue Off-ramp temporarily reduced to one lane
Nighttime lane closures on Westside Parkway and Truxtun Avenue
The eastbound Westside Parkway loop off-ramp to Truxtun Avenue will be reduced
to one lane next week to facilitate upcoming work on the Kern River Bridge
Improvements Project. The adjustment is needed to allow eastbound Truxtun
Avenue traffic to be moved away from the edge of the roadway while a new
bridge embankment is built on the south side of the road. This embankment is
expected to take six to eight weeks to complete; however, the loop ramp will
remain one lane until the bridge work across Truxtun Avenue is completed.
The contractor plans to install channelizers and temporary concrete barrier rail
along Truxtun Avenue in the vicinity of the off-ramp Monday through Wednesday
nights, August 14–16. Motorists should expect lane closures in this area between
9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. At least one lane will remain open while work is underway.
Although the eastbound loop ramp will be reduced to one lane, eastbound and
westbound travel lanes are expected to remain open to daytime traffic.
Also, nighttime closures are planned for the Westside Parkway (both the eastbound
and westbound directions) from just west of the Mohawk Street off-ramp to Truxtun
Avenue. Motorists should anticipate alternating lane closures in this area on Sunday
through Thursday nights, August 13-17, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
At least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times. If needed, these
nighttime closures will continue during the same days and hours next week.
The contractor will be re-striping the roadway and placing channelizers on
eastbound Westside Parkway to funnel traffic down to one lane prior to the Truxtun
Avenue loop off-ramp. In addition, temporary concrete barrier rail will be placed
along the inside shoulders in both directions in this area to allow for construction in
the median. Lane closures are expected to be lifted for the morning commute.
The Kern River Bridge Improvements project is the first phase of the Centennial
Corridor project; it constructs bridges and makes the necessary improvements for
the future freeway’s connection to the Westside Parkway. The Thomas Roads
Improvement Program (TRIP) apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause
the traveling public. For additional information on the Kern River Bridge
Improvements Project, please visit our website at www.BakersfieldFreeways.us.
Nighttime Closures for State Routes 58 and 99
The following closures have been scheduled for construction work on the Beltway
Operational Improvements Project for next week:
o The westbound State Route 58 off-ramp to Chester Avenue will be closed
Monday night, August 14th, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. for

electrical work. Motorists will need to exit the freeway at Union Avenue and
head west on Brundage Lane to access Chester Avenue.
o Nighttime alternating lane closures are planned for northbound and
southbound State Route 99 at two locations between Ming Avenue and Wilson
Road on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The alternating lane closures will allow
for electrical boring beneath the freeway and are expected be in place
between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on both nights. At least one lane
in both directions will be open to traffic during the operation.
o Motorists should also anticipate intermittent nighttime closures of the two
outside lanes on eastbound State Route 58, between P Street and Madison
Street, in the coming weeks. These closures are for off-loading sound wall
materials. Construction will be performed during the day.
o Concrete work is scheduled for the eastbound State Route 58 off-ramp to
Cottonwood Road during daytime hours next week. This work will be behind
temporary concrete barrier rail, but watch for construction workers and
equipment when exiting the freeway at this location.

The Bakersfield Crime Free Multi-Housing program is designed as
a partnership between law enforcement and rental property
owners, managers, and tenants to keep drugs and illegal activity
out of rental property. When crime and drugs operate out of rental
property, neighborhoods suffer and landlords pay a high price.
That price may include the loss of valued tenants, decline in
property values, property damage, civil penalties, fear, frustration,
resentment and anger between neighbors, tenants, and property
managers. Please join us for this first phase of training to make
your property a CRIME FREE property.
