HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 153-02RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CiTY OF BAKERSFIELD IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSED PRESIDENTIAL EXECUTIVE ORDER ALLOWING FOREIGN VEHICLES TO OPERATE WITHIN THE UNITED STATES WITH STRONG ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SUCH VEHICLES TO MEET SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS IMPOSED UPON THE CITIZENS OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield has for several years supported environmental efforts to help "clean the air" in California, the San Joaquin Valley, and the City, including the use of clean burning alternative fuel vehicles, and WHEREAS, the residents of Bakersfield through their individual efforts and through the Bakersfield Vision 2020 process have clearly stated their desire for clean air, and WHEREAS, progress toward cleaning the air has over the years moved forward in small but important incremental steps, and WHEREAS, Bakersfield and Kern County face the possibility of federal sanctions if further steps to clean the air are not met, and WHEREAS, the President's proposal through Executive Order to open the border to truck traffic from Mexico not meeting the environmental standards of the United States would have an immediate negative impact upon the air quality of the State of California, the San Joaquin Valley, and the City of Bakersfield, and WHEREAS, the negative impact upon the states most closely impacted by increased air contaminants needs to be fully explored as part of an overall trade strategy between nations, and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Bakersfield that the City Council supports the President's proposal, through Executive Order, to open the border to foreign trucks, but strongly encourages the President to require any foreign trucks to meet the safety and environmental standards which are imposed upon the citizens of the State of California.
