OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
September 8, 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager
SUBJECT: General Information
Notable Items
As a result of the wind and storm event last weekend, several trees were uprooted,
many trees lost large limbs and many storm drains became blocked. Staff from
Recreation and Parks and Public Works have been working diligently since the day
of the storm to remove trees and clean out storm drains. This clean-up work will
continue for several more days.
Last week the Bakersfield Police Department’s SWAT team assisted with the
Hurricane Harvey Relief Drive, which was held on August 31st behind BJ’s restaurant.
They assisted other volunteers by collecting, stacking, and organizing items that
were donated by the community. The initial goal was to collect enough items to fill
a 65 foot semi-truck. This goal was more than exceeded and filled two trucks.
The Bakersfield Police Department will begin recruitment for police trainee, on
September 8, 2017. The application period will close on Tuesday, October 8, 2017 at
1:00 PM PST. The position description and online application system can be found on
the Human Resources website. The next academy is slated to begin February 2018.

descriptions and application can be found on the Community Relations website.
The next Citizen Volunteer Academy is currently scheduled to begin January 9, 2018.
The Kugal Fountain at the Amtrak Station has been restored and is up and running.
The contractor did a great job removing all the hard water stain and polished and
sealed the fixture.
