Curbside trash service will not be impacted by the holiday. Notable Items  The second annual Bakersfield Marathon will take place on Sunday, November 12th. Temporary street closures will be in effect for several hours as participants make their way through the course. The reopening of streets will occur on a rolling basis as soon as the Police Department determines it is safe to resume normal traffic flow. Estimated street closure times are provided in the attached flyer. Please note that Stockdale Highway from Gosford Road to Calloway Drive will be closed for the entire duration of the event. The Westside Parkway, Camino Media, and Ming Avenue are alternate east/west routes within the general area. The Kern River Multi-Use Path will be closed to the general public during the event from Manor Street to the path exit at Don Hart Drive/Stockdale Highway.  The City held its annual employee health and wellness fair this past Tuesday, November 7, in the lobby of the Rabobank Theatre. Almost 40 health and wellness vendors shared valuable benefits information, gave health screenings, and shared information on healthy lifestyles through opportunities such as gym memberships and bicycle safety training. The City’s wellness program supports a healthy lifestyle through diverse and sustainable wellness activities for employees and their families. General Information November 9, 2017 Page 2 Attendees visit vendor and informational tables at the Health and Wellness Fair  Today, the Bakersfield Police Department was able to present a donation $10,000 to the Lauren Small Children’s Center at Memorial hospital thanks to the generous community effort during the 3rd Annual K-9 Trial this past June 24th. The trials, which were open to the public, brought together 46 K-9 handlers from agencies throughout the state to showcase their four-legged partners’ abilities through various agility and obedience courses, area searches, and apprehension exercises. Traffic Advisory Nighttime lane and ramp closures for State Routes 58 and 99 A nighttime ramp closure is planned for the State Route 58 Union Avenue off-ramp on Monday and Tuesday nights, November 13-14, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The two outside lanes in the vicinity of the off-ramp are also expected to be closed during these hours to allow for paving in this area. Motorists will need to exit the freeway at H Street or Cottonwood Road while the paving operation is underway. General Information November 9, 2017 Page 3 The contractor plans to close the two outside lanes on northbound State Route 99, Monday through Wednesday nights, November 13-15, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures are also needed for a paving operation. The Ming Avenue off-ramp is expected to be closed while this work is underway. Motorists can exit the freeway at White Lane or Stockdale Highway. Alternating lane closures are planned for southbound State Route 99 on Wednesday night, November 15, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. The closures are needed for restriping, which will shift the traffic lanes to the outside of the roadway. The Ming Avenue southbound on-ramp is expected to be closed during this time frame. At least one freeway lane will be open while this work is underway. Motorists can enter the freeway at Real Road or White Lane. Around-the-clock closure for P Street An around-the-clock closure is needed for the reconstruction of P Street at State Route 58. The street is expected to close at this location on Monday at 9 p.m. and re-open on Thursday at 5 a.m. During this closure, motorists will need to use either Chester Avenue or Union Avenue to cross the freeway. Please stay alert and watch for construction workers and equipment while driving through the construction zone. October 28: Patriots Park, Victory Outreach SW Community Outreach – 450 Guests The Park at River Walk, Super Fly Children’s Foundation Walk/Run – 1,000 Guests Yokuts Park, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Walk/Run – 300 Guests • Total Attendance: 25,204 Reservations/Special Events Silver Creek Community Center • Total Attendance: o Overall attendance was 733 as compared to last year of 175. The increase in attendance was attributed to a pavilion rental of 600 attendees. o There was one (1) rental for the month. Saunders Recreational Facility • Total Attendance: o Overall attendance was 841 as compared to last year of 992. Attendance is down due to no Roller Derby rentals. o There were four (4) rentals for the month. • Soccer Program: 10 Registered Teams / Total Attendance: 480 AQUATICS Total attendance for Aquatics was 2,611 which was a 17% increase compared to October 2016 attendance of 2,229. Although the Elementary Swim Program at Silver Creek was eliminated, there was an increase to attendance due to the addition of Bakersfield Swim Academy swim team and Bakersfield Christian High School water polo rentals. McMurtrey Aquatic Center: o Monthly attendance at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center was 2,611 compared to last year’s 1,714. This was a 52% increase which can be attributed to the 2016 fall pool closure for new slide construction and the addition of rentals in the afternoons at McMurtrey. o Fall and winter evening lap swim was eliminated as of October 28th due to budget reductions. We anticipate this impacting attendance in future months. 100 Mile Club: The 100 Mile Lap Swim Club is currently made up of 400 active members that swam 14,837.51 miles through the month of October. The club has swum a combined total of 175,671 miles. Aquatic Grant Activities: o First 5 Kern Make A Splash- We conducted a Pediatric CPR with AED, First Aid, and Water Safety Training on October 7th. Twelve participants received American Red Cross certifications and water safety resources at no cost. The annual Fall Site Visit with a First 5 Kern Program Officer took place on October 17th. We have successfully completed the Department of Recreation and Parks October 2017 Monthly Report Page 3 We enhance the quality of life through a variety of programs, parks, and partnerships. swim lesson milestone and are on target for all other areas of the grant. o Kaiser Permanente Operation Splash- Aquatic staff attended the Good Neighbor Festival at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on October 14th and the Bakersfield Homeless Center Halloween Carnival on October 28th. Staff provided valuable “Rethink Your Drink” healthy beverage and water safety education to thousands of attendees. ATHLETICS Total attendance for Athletics was 41,641, a 10% increase compared to October 2016 attendance of 37,591 and can be attributed to changing Adult Softball Program to four games per night instead of three games per night. Athletic Programming/Adult Softball: The Fall Softball League continued through the month of October with 144 teams playing a total of 424 games this month. Softball Tournaments Mesa Marin Sports Complex hosted an employee appreciation tournament for the California Correctional Institution with 560 attending. League of Dreams o League of Dreams continued the basketball league this month with 179 athletes participating. o The program’s 298 “Angel Volunteers” donated approximately 1,490 hours of their time this month. Adult Adaptive Co-Rec Softball League Seven teams participating in the Fall Adaptive Softball League at Beach Park. o Donations: $16,390.00 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center • Total Attendance: o Overall attendance for the month was 6,930; an increase of 11% as opposed to last year’s total of 6,237 due to higher attendance at the Good Neighbor Festival. o Halloween Town – October 27th with 150 in attendance. Staff decorated several rooms with many fun activities. Stay Focused Ministries participated with several contests for attendees. o Good Neighbor Festival – Saturday, October 14th with approximately 2,500 people in attendance. o Fifty (50) vendor booths, a petting zoo, face painting, climbing wall, cake walk, obstacle course, free food and an immunization clinic. o Many organizations sponsor this event including Clinica Sierra Vista, Kern First 5, Stop the Violence, Stay Focused Ministries, Kern Family Health Care and Southeast Neighborhood Partnership. o Build-A-Bike Program – received a $6,000 grant from the Transportation Development Act. ADMINISTRATION Mesa Marin Sports Complex (phase 2) – Sod installation during the first week of November. The playground will be installed later in November. The fence will remain in place until ready to open. Maxicom Upgrade Project (phase 2) – The State has approved the additional work for Patriots and Central Parks on October 24, 2017. California Avenue & Q Street • Herbicide and pre-emergent was applied to City property on north east side on 10/30/17 & 10/31/17 in preparation for future woodchip installation. Maxicom System • On 10/8/17 D.B.D Diagnostic check and repair was run on the computer system. • During the month of October staff has addressed various alarms as needed at the following locations: River Oaks East, Haggin Oaks Park, Deer Peak Park, Kroll Park, River Oaks West, Castle Park, Campus Park North and Campus Park South. Mesa Marin • Training staff for the recycling new Water Spray Park was conducted by Vortex on 10/12/17. Saunders Pavilion • Score board installation on 10/17/17; easier to use. Tree Maintenance o Staff, with assistance from the Water Department, removed 44 encampments from the Kern River. o Staff delivered the ticket booth and mobile restrooms to 3 different concerts at the Park at Riverwalk during the month of October. o Staff has removed tumbleweeds and weeds along the bike path from Manor street east bound to the weir, located below the bluffs. o Tree staff trimmed all trees on Johnson Rd. from Renfro to Rider. o Tree staff assisted area 2,3,4 and 5 with mass pruning projects during the month of October. o Area 6 staff mass trimmed multiple locations during the month of October: • Johnson Rd. between Renfro and Rider • Stockdale Hwy between Jenkins and Renfro • Palm between Allen and Jenkins • Jenkins between Hinault Dr. and Barnsdale Ave Trimming: • Trees Trimmed: 62 Clearance: 32 Removals: 4 • Service Tickets: Received: 173 Completed: 112 UPCOMING/ONGOING EVENTS: • For additional activities and events offered through the Recreation and Parks Department, please visit the website at www.bakersfieldparks.us.
