Curbside trash service is delayed one day due to the holiday. Notable Items  Attached is a press release that went out this past week regarding the upcoming annual 4th of July Community Celebration at the Park at River Walk. Please note that parking for this event is extremely limited. The vacant lot at the corner of Stockdale Highway and Buena Vista Road, which in years past has been used for overflow parking, will be unavailable this year as it was last year. Signage and staff will be directing people not to park in this location. Citizens are encouraged to utilize alternative methods of transportation including walking, biking, public transportation and carpooling to get to the park. Secure bike valet parking will be provided by Bike Bakersfield starting at 6:00 p.m. and utilizing the bike path is a great way to get to the event. The event begins at 6:00 p.m., with music starting at 7:00 p.m. and fireworks scheduled for 9:15 p.m.  The Bakersfield Fire Department has three press releases on planned monitoring activity during the July 4th holiday. The Bakersfield Fire Department, in collaboration with the Bakersfield Police Department, will deploy joint Fireworks Task Force teams for dealing with reports of illegal fireworks usage in the City of Bakersfield during the period of July 3rd through July 4th. Additionally, Bakersfield Fire Department (BFD) has established a temporary “HOTLINE” @ 661-868-6070 for the reporting of illegal Fireworks. The line may be used by Bakersfield residents that wish to report the illegal use or storage of fireworks or explosives on July 3 - 4, (7:00 p.m. - 12:00 p.m.). Finally, Bakersfield Fire Department will be hosting a voluntary fireworks drop off event on July 3, @ 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (PDT) where citizens may drop off illegal fireworks with no questions asked. We wish all a safe and fun holiday celebration! General Information June 29, 2018 Page 2  The Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention returns to Rabobank Arena today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) for the second of six summer weekends. This is the largest convention that meets in Bakersfield. Each weekend attracts about 6,000 delegates, fills hotel rooms throughout the city and keeps restaurants busy. Visit Bakersfield has provided the event organizers with Bakersfield maps and information on downtown restaurants for distribution to those attending the meetings. The other convention weekends are July 27th-29th, August 3rd -5th, August 17th-19th and August 24th-26th.  There is now a dedicated rideshare location at Bakersfield Amtrak Station. Train passengers using rideshare companies like Uber or Lyft now have a convenient and location exclusively for drop-off and pick-up. Look for this sign on the north side of the Amtrak station, east of “S” Street. You will be just steps away from the station’s north or west lobby doors.  The Recreation and Parks Department still have approximately 80 slots open for $5 discounted swim lessons at City pools. The last two sessions for children ages 6 months to 5 years runs from July 9th – 19th and July 23rd- August 2nd. Registration must be made in person at the McMurtrey, MLK & Silver Creek Centers. See the attached flyer for program information or call staff at 661-852-7430 for program availability.  The 3rd Annual David Nelson EOW workout takes place tomorrow, June 30th starting at 8:00 a.m. at Garces High School. General Information June 29, 2018 Page 3 Traffic Advisories  Nighttime Lane Closures Scheduled for Truxtun Avenue Work on the Kern River Bridge Improvements project will require nighttime lane closures on Truxtun Avenue from Sunday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 3, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The lane closures will be in the vicinity of the Westside Parkway on- and off-ramps, but the ramps will remain open to traffic. The lane closures are needed to allow the contractor to install rebar for the bridge abutment on the north side of Truxtun Avenue. The closures include both westbound lanes and the inside eastbound lane on Truxtun Avenue. Westbound Truxtun Avenue motorists will need to detour around the closure via California Avenue or Rosedale Highway, then use Mohawk Street to access Truxtun Avenue businesses and side streets west of the closure. Access to Commercial Way will be available from eastbound Truxtun Avenue while the work is underway. All lanes on Truxtun Avenue are expected to be open by the morning commute.  Nighttime Lane Closures on State Route 58 Motorists travelling on State Route 58 during nighttime hours should anticipate closures of the outside lanes, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, between State Route 99 and Union Avenue on Monday, July 2 and Thursday, July 5. The closures are needed for electrical work and are expected to be in place between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. No nighttime closures are planned on July 3rd-4th. The event, produced by the City of Bakersfield and AEG, is made possible by the contributions of generous sponsors, including Pacific Gas & Electric, Adventist Health, Rabobank N.A., Cal Water, Spectrum, and the Robert and Kari Grimm Family Foundation. The event will get started at 6:00 PM, with music by Mento Buru starting at 7:00 PM, and the fireworks scheduled for 9:15 PM. Food and beverage will be available for sale by El Churro Loco, Pita Paradise, Barrington’s Jamaican Kitchen, Fuego’s and Carney Kettle Corn. The event will be live streamed by KERO 23 on turnto23.com, and music for the firework portion of the event will be simulcast by KUZZ. Parking for this event is extremely limited. Parking will not be allowed in the commercial district along Stockdale Highway or the vacant lot at the corner of Stockdale and Buena Vista. Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation to attend the event. Secure bike valet parking will be provided by Bike Bakersfield starting at 6:00 PM. Designated picnic shelters and areas throughout the Park are available for reservations, though they are not required to attend the event. Reservations must be made in person. BFD/BPD Fireworks Task Force will be made up of a total of thirty-eight (38) teams staged throughout the City over the target period, prepared for response to reports of illegal fireworks related activities. Task Force members will confiscate illegal fireworks and issue citations to those offenders that are in violation of the California Health and Safety Code and/or the City of Bakersfield Municipal Code. Remember: to be legal in California, all fireworks must have the State of California Fire Marshal's seal and the slogan, "Safe & Sane” All others are illegal and will be confiscated and citations and fines issued. City residents may drop off fireworks that would be deemed illegal within the City of Bakersfield at any Bakersfield City Fire Station. Legal or other consumer-grade fireworks may be dropped off as well. The purpose of this program is to allow citizens the opportunity to surrender illegal fireworks that could result in up to a $1,000 fine at any other time, and ahead of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday enforcement.
