For the second year in a row our local NBC affiliate, KGET-17, is partnering with
the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center for the national “Clear the Shelters” effort. The campaign officially began July 28th with reduced adoption fees leading
up to the Clear the Shelters Day event on Saturday, August 18th from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at 201 South Mt. Vernon Avenue. On the day of the event, all adoption
fees will be waived and all dogs and cats will be available including having all
necessary shots, deworming and flea treatments, spay/neuter and microchip. Based
on last year, this is a very popular event that includes food and activities along with
a lot of animals looking for a forever home. In 2017, 304 pets were adopted during
the campaign, with 167 on the day of the event. If you would like to volunteer or
participate please contact Julie Johnson at (661) 832-7387, ext. 205 or

There has been some confusion and misunderstanding regarding the status of the
City’s curbside recycling program. To be clear, there have been no changes in the recycling program. City residents should continue to utilize their blue cans and
recycle materials as they have in the past.
Materials accepted in the curbside blue recycling bins include cardboard, junk mail,
newspaper, magazines, office paper, phone books, brown paper bags, #1 - #7 rigid
plastic containers, aluminum/steel cans and green, brown or clear glass. All
recyclable materials placed in the blue bins should be unsoiled and/or cleaned
thoroughly, which helps reduce costs associated with processing the materials. The
attached flyer provides an overview of acceptable recyclable materials.
Materials not accepted in the curbside blue recycling bins include household
garbage, oily/dirty paper, polystyrene packaging/containers, green waste,
electronics/appliances, plastic wrap, foil drink containers, plastic hangers and
packaging, plastic grocery/dry cleaning bags and household hazardous waste.
Changes in the global markets have prompted staff to evaluate options for the
program moving forward, which is an ongoing and evolving process. A workshop
will be held in September to update the City Council on the issue and outline a path
moving forward. If future adjustments to the City’s recycling program are necessary,

they will be accompanied by robust public outreach and education campaigns.
Any member of the public with questions regarding the City’s curbside recycling
program should contact the Solid Waste Division at (661) 326-3114.
Earlier this year the City Council approved the implementation of several
recommendations to improve parking in the downtown area. One of the
recommendations was to enhance and promote the City’s parking garage at 18th
and Eye Streets as a viable option for short and long-term parking in the downtown
area. As part of this effort, the City has increased onsite security at the facility. The
number of hours the security staff is on site at the facility has doubled in an effort to
enhance user experience.
The 18th & Eye Street parking structure offers hourly and monthly parking spaces in
the heart of downtown Bakersfield. Patrons can park in the covered garage and
quickly access nearby retailers, restaurants, hotels, government buildings and event
venues within a short walking distance. Hourly parking is free for up to two hours and
only $1 for each additional hour. Monthly parking is available for about $1 per day.
The structure is fully automated for user convenience, with entrances located on Eye
Street and 18th Street. Monthly parking spaces are available by contacting the City
of Bakersfield Finance Department at (661) 326-3787.
In addition, the Police Department’s Parking Enforcement team is distributing
materials as part of the City’s outreach effort to make the public aware of the
garage as a convenient, secure and covered parking option in downtown
Bakersfield. A copy of the material is enclosed.
More information about the garage is available at: https://goo.gl/Sjq57R
We have two exciting concerts tomorrow night! The Spectrum Ampitheatre is pleased to host Grammy-award winning artist Ziggy Marley, this Saturday evening,
August 18th. Ziggy Marley, the eldest son of legendary musician Bob Marley, will perform with group Steel Pulse on their Rebellion Rises Tour.
The long-awaited performance by Jack White will also take place at the Rabobank
Theatre tomorrow night. Born the youngest of 10 children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, Jack White is known for being the
lead singer of the duo The White Stripes, but has had success in other bands and as a solo artist. A friendly reminder that this is a no-phone show.

Special thanks go to our Recreations and Parks Department for coordinating the
landscape project at Akers & McKee in Ward 7. The newly installed landscaping,
completed with final walkthrough this morning, will be maintained by City crews and
has greatly added to the aesthetics of this formerly bare and unkempt area. See
photos of the newly completed project below
The Recreation and Parks Department have released the 2018 Fall Activities
Brochure. A limited amount of hard copies will be available starting August 24 at the
Recreation and Parks Administration office, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
McMurtrey Aquatic, and Silver Creek centers. The brochure can be viewed online on the City’s website here: https://goo.gl/wseQtM
Traffic Advisory
Full Freeway Closure - State Route 99 at Belle Terrace
State Route 99 is scheduled to be closed to all traffic early Sunday morning between
the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. in the vicinity of the Belle Terrace Overcrossing. The Belle
Terrace Overcrossing and both directions of Wible Road will also be closed in this area during these hours.
The closures affect both directions of travel on State Route 99, and are needed to allow
temporary utility lines to be strung across the freeway in advance of construction on Centennial Corridor Phase 2 – the Belle Terrace Operational Improvements. The utility
lines will be placed in the new bridge following construction.
Signage will be in place for the following freeway detour routes:
Northbound State Route 99 motorists will exit the freeway at Ming Avenue and continue east to H Street, then travel north to State Route 58, and return to
northbound State Route 99 via State Route 58.
Southbound State Route 99 motorists will take State Route 58 to the H Street exit

Night Closures – Westbound Westside Parkway On-ramp from Truxtun Avenue
The contractor for the Kern River Bridge Improvements project continues to set
falsework for the new bridge crossing the Kern River. This bridge will be part of the future
Centennial Corridor’s westbound exit to Mohawk Street and crosses over the existing
westbound Westside Parkway on-ramp from Truxtun Avenue. The westbound Truxtun
Avenue on-ramp will need to be closed during nighttime hours, between 9 p.m. and 5
a.m., while falsework is set above and adjacent to the on-ramp. Motorists should
anticipate nighttime closures to be in place for this on-ramp from Monday, August 27
through Friday, September 21.
Westbound motorists will need to enter the Westside Parkway from Mohawk Street when
the Truxtun Avenue on-ramp is closed. The closures are not expected to impact
eastbound Westside Parkway or Truxtun Avenue traffic. The on-ramp is expected to
open each day in time for the morning commute.
