AN ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD ADDING SECTION 17.60.080 N TO
THE BAKERSFIELD MUNICIPAL CODE PROHIBITING
FREESTANDING SIGNS, OTHER THAN MONUMENT SIGNS
AND OUTDOOR ADVERTISING SIGNS ON PROPERTY
BETWEEN HIGHWAY 99 ON THE EAST, THE SANTA FE
RAILROAD RIGHT OF WAY TO AND ALONG THE CARRIER
CANAL ON THE SOUTH, COFFEE ROAD ON THE WEST,
AND THE NORTHERN BANK OF THE KERN RIVER ON THE NORTH.
WHEREAS, Truxtun Avenue between Coffee Road and Highway
99 is the City's only major arterial adjacent to the Kern River; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate and in the interests of the
public welfare that the aesthetic potential of the Kern River
corridor between Highway 99 and Coffee Road not be impacted by
installation of high visibility signage; and
WHEREAS, the City has heretofore shown its interest in
maintaining Truxtun Avenue as a unique traffic arterial, limiting
signalization and maintaining a tree-lined median along portions
thereof; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the
City of Bakersfield as follows:
SECTION 1.
Section 17.60.080 N. is hereby added to the Bakersfield
Municipal Code to read as follows:
17.60.080 Specific Prohibitions.
N. Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary con-
tained in this chapter, no freestanding sign (other than monument
signs and directional signs, as defined in Section 17.60.030) and
no outdoor advertising signs shall be permitted on property
within the area described and circumscribed as follows:
Beginning at the intersection of the southerly line of the pri-
mary flood plain, as designated in the Kern River Plan, and the
westerly right-of-way line of Highway 99, then southerly along
said right-of-way line to the southerly right-of-way line of
the Carrier Canal then westerly to the easterly right-of-way line
of the Stine Canal, then southerly along said right-of-way line
to the northerly right-of-way line of the Santa Fe railroad, then
westerly along said line to the westerly right-of-way line of the
Carrier Canal, then westerly along said line to the easterly
right-of-way line of Coffee Road, then northerly along said line
to the southerly line of the primary flood plain, then easterly
along said line to the point of beginning.
SECTION 2.
This ordinance shall be posted in accordance with the
City charter provisions and shall become effective thirty (30)
days from and after the date of its passage.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Ordinance was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regu-
lar meeting thereof held on May 6, ]987

at the City Hall, a full, true and correct copy of an ordinance passed by the Council of said City
at a meeting thereof duly held on May 6 , 19 87 , which ordinance
was numbered 3098 New Series, and entitled:
An Ordinance of the Council of the City of
Bakersfield adding Section 17.60.080 N. to
the Bakersfield Municipal Code prohibiting
freestanding signs, other than monument signs
and outdoor advertising signs on property
between Highway 99 on the east, the Santa Fe
Railroad right-of-way to and along the Carrier
Canal on the south, Coffee Road on the west,
and the northern bank of the Kern River on
the north.
