The pipe fill material shall consist of a lean mix of cement (2 sacks per yard) and sand or controlled low strength material (CLSM) and shall be placed in the pipe to fully backfill the pipe without voids. After filling the pipe, the Contractor shall plug each end of the pipe in the within the manholes with concrete (not less than 505 pounds of cementitious material per cubic yard) and shall shape the concrete to conform to the manhole wall. The concrete plug shall be a minimum of one (1) foot in thickness. When CLSM is proposed for use, the Contractor shall submit a mix design and test data to the Engineer for approval prior to abandoning the storm drain pipe for which controlled low strength material is proposed for use. The test data and mix design shall provide for the following: A. A 28 -day compressive strength between 50 pounds per square inch and 100 pounds per square inch. Compressive strength shall be determined in conformance with the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 4832. B. Cement shall be any type of portland cement conforming to the requirements in ASTM Designation: C 150; or any type of blended hydraulic cement conforming to the requirements in ASTM Designation: C 595 or the physical requirements in ASTM Designation: C 1157. Testing of cement will not be required. C. Admixtures may be used in conformance with the provisions in Section 90-1.02E, "Admixtures," of the Standard Specifications. Chemical admixtures containing chlorides as Cl in excess of one percent by weight of admixture, as determined in conformance with the requirements of California Test 415, shall not be used. If an air -entraining admixture is used, the maximum air content shall be limited to 20 percent. Materials for CLSM shall be thoroughly machine -mixed in a pugmill, rotary drum or other approved mixer. Mixing shall cpntinue until the cementitious materia; and water are thoroughly dispersed throughout the material. The fill material chosen be the Contractor shall be placed in the work within 3 hours after introduction of the cement to the aggregates.
