TO: Bakersfield Youth Commission FROM: Nathan Gutierrez CREATED BY: Nathan Gutierrez DATE: 11/1/2019 WARD: SUBJECT: Review and Discuss "Sing Out, Speak Out" event survey results to determine public Youth Commission outreach priorities for 2019-2020. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: BACKGROUND: On June 7, 2019, the Bakersfield Youth Commission held the inaugural "Sing Out, Speak Out' event at Riverwalk Amphitheatre, in partnership with the City of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks Department, to create awareness within the community about issues that concern local youth. Event speakers included city staff from City of Bakersfield departments including: Bakersfield Police, Visit Bakersfield, Recreation and Parks, Solid Waste, City Councilmember Bob Smith and Mayor Karen Goh. Musical entertainment was provided by local youth musician Ethan Chandler. Youth event attendees were surveyed to determined local issues they feel are most important and where opportunities to make a difference in the community may be present. Survey results were previously shared by City Staff with the Youth Commission at the August 5, 2019 meeting. Further discussion of the results and the next steps for planning the Youth Commission goals for 2020 have been delayed until now due to turnover in some Youth Commissioner positions because of the expiration of Commissioner's term limits, requiring the swearing in of new Youth Commissioners, including the Chair and Vice Chair positions, which occurred at the October 7, 2019 Youth Commission meeting.
