HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/08/2019AT / JK OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER November 8, 2019 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Alan Tandy, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information City Offices will be CLOSED Monday, November 11, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. Curbside trash and recycling services will not be affected. Notable Items  The Sister City Gardens Festival is just eight days away! On November 16, the evet will feature free music, dancing, martial arts, children’s activities and much more. The City’s Recreation & Parks Department has been hard at work getting Mill Creek Park ready for all the fun and visitors. Staff has finished adding shrubs to the planters along the west side of the canal in the park. You can see the difference the plants are making in these before (top left) and after (bottom left) photos. General Information November 8, 2019 Page 2 Staff also cleared what they could of the debris in the aerators. Water will begin flowing soon and the aerators will be turned back on shortly thereafter.  Urban greening continues! The Recreation & Parks Department’s $1.5 million Replanting Project, funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N), started at the end of October. To date, contractor Kern Sprinkler Landscaping planted more than 4,400 shrubs along streetscapes in northeast Bakersfield (above). The project will bring more than 3,500 trees and 32,100 shrubs back to City streetscapes and parks, replacing plant life lost due to the drought.  The City’s Human Waste Cleanup Pilot Program has completed it’s sixth week with encouraging results. Since launching on September 30, the program has responded to 283 calls for cleanup and we are hearing positive feedback from the public. For example, the office manager of the Bakersfield Masonic Event Center on 18th Street has reached out to thank the City for the program, calling it an “asset to our community in our homeless situation.”  The Bakersfield Police Department held their second Hal-LAW-een Meet and Greet (left) on Thursday, October 31 and 1,908 people show up during the two-hour event! Units with BPD decorated themed trick-or-treat stations for children to visit. The themes included Marvel’s Avengers, Toy Story, Dr. Suess, Candyland and even IT. Each floor had several stations and at the end of the event, the public was invited to vote on their favorite trick-or-treat station. Check out this video from Hal-LAW-een: http://bit.ly/32pClNQ General Information November 8, 2019 Page 3  On November 6, Bakersfield Police held a Coffee with a Cop event at Blue Oak Coffee Roasting on 20th Street. The event allowed the BPD to build a positive relationship with a business that was previously dissatisfied with service. Zone commanders and others have continued to provide outreach to the business and the area and have been improving relations there.  The McMurtrey Aquatic Center is scheduled to be closed November 11 through December 15. Contractors will be working on the locker room floors, replacing counter tops, retrofitting sand filters in the pump room and changing lights to LED fixtures. During the extended shut down, pools are drained for a thorough cleaning and the slides are waxed. The constant, year-round use of the McMurtrey Aquatic Center for the past seventeen years is showing its wear on mechanics, locker rooms and outside areas. The City of Bakersfield intends to keep the facility clean, safe and operating for many years to come!  I will be on vacation from October 31 through November 15. During my absence Chris Huot will be in charge. The office will have my contact information in the event of an emergency.
